GLIMPSES OF HEAVEN
There are times in our lives that we get the chance
to see a glimpse of heaven. It may be through the
love of another, loved one or stranger. Sometimes it
may even be an event that seems unexplainable,
perhaps even supernatural. These occurrences may
be the answer to prayer or they may surprise us by
coming out of nowhere. But no matter their nature
or origin, they give us hope and strength to carry on
through life.
When we journey on a pathway of stewardship, we
are bound to experience moments of grace where
we see even the smallest seeds we planted grow into
something amazing. At these moments, we are re-
minded that God is real and that our stewardship is
not in vain. The giving of our gifts and talents is not
just a response to God's calling. The giving is one
way that God breaks through into the lives of oth-
ers. As we use what God has given us for his glory,
he uses us as instruments of grace to be truly pre-
sent to others.
The greatest example of this occurs at the Mass.
Through the hands of an ordained priest taking the
gifts of bread and wine, God is really present with
us. When we then take Christ into our bodies, we
accept the offer to take him into the world to others.
The world cannot see Jesus in us with human eyes,
but through our works of stewardship, they can see
Jesus in us. One could say they even have a chance
to see a glimpse of heaven.
Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Since my college days I’ve loved a song called “Dance
with You” by the rock band Live. It touches on the
deep mystical hunger of our heart: “I’ve tasted all the
wines/ a half a billion times/ came sickened to your
shore/ you showed me what this life is for.” These
lines resonate with anyone who has feasted on the
good things of this world only to be left spiritually
hungover and unsatisfied.
We see a similar dynamic evoked by Jesus’ words after
he feeds the crowd with bread and fish. To teach them
to hunger for God, he recalls God’s gift of manna-
bread for the hungry ancient Israelites. Those folks had
grown spiritually sick from the idolatrous food of
Egypt yet still longed for more worthless pagan food.
So, God sent heavenly bread to nourish their bodies,
but also to heal their distrustful hearts. His people
like us must learn to hunger and thirst for God
alone. Before we can receive that which will not disap-
point, we first must cease expecting that earthly goods
will satisfy us.
We will get to the Lord’s teaching on the Eucharist in
the next two weeks. But first, he asks us: do you trust
me to take care of you? Do you trust me to give you
what you need for each day, and to not worry about the
next day? Do you see that when you hungrily stuff
yourself with the things of this world you become sick
and lose your taste for the bread of life? So, our hungry
hearts cry out: Lord, help us to trust that you’ll provide
for our every need. Help us to use only what we truly
need. Help us hunger for the goodness of your Son,
who is the true bread from heaven. That is what this
life is for.
Father John Muir

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
The Pastoral Solidarity Fund is a collection for
the Church in Africa. This collection
offers us an opportunity to stand
with the people of Africa and sup-
port pastoral projects that are so
needed on this continent. Projects
include support for migrants and
communications efforts, building of new churches,
and formation for priests and religious. Please
prayerfully consider supporting this collection.
FROM THE MUSIC LOFT
We bring back the hymn, Though the Mountains May Fall,
a relatively older hymn of Dan Schutte that was introduced
last year to this congregation. There are so many wonder-
ful gems in Breaking Bread that are undiscovered by
OLA. Many we will never get to experience. The joy in
programming musical selections for a congregation is
threefold: selecting hymns that 1) the people of the con-
gregation know well enough that they are comfortable and
enjoy singing, 2) have lyrical purpose in that the music
reflects the readings or a particular feast celebration and,
3) help the congregation grow deeper in faith (and new
lyrics and new melodies can help us sense differently).
So! There is method in the madness of hymn selection. If
there is a hymn you are curious about or want to be intro-
duced, please reach out to the music director via email:
musicOLAbx@gmail.com or dropping a note at the recto-
ry, or even stopping by the loft sometime. Hymns are of-
ten selected months in advance so that we are prepared as
a collective music team. Your thoughts will be taken seri-
ously.

Mark 10:27
EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15
The Israelites complain that Moses led them to
the desert and there is no food for them there.
Then the Lord told Moses he would rain down
bread from heaven so the people might know
that “I, the Lord, am your God.” God did as he
had promised and in the morning the people
found the bread that he had given them.
Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17, 20-24
Paul tells the Ephesians that they must give up
their old way of life and live in accordance with
the truth that Christ has brought them. He re-
minds them to acquire a spiritual way of think-
ing, and to remember that they are made in
God’s image and act accordingly.
Gospel: John 6:24-35
The people Jesus had fed on five loaves of bread
follow him, and Jesus tells them they should not
be looking for perishable food, but for spiritual
food. The people want a sign that they should
believe in him. He explains that he is the bread
of life, and anyone who believes will not experi-
ence hunger or thirst. The people did not fully
understand that he was speaking in the spiritual
sense, and not of actual food.

A Call To Live
First I was dying to finish high school and
start college.
And then I was dying to finish college and
start working.
And then I was dying to marry and have
children.
And then I was dying for my children
to grow old enough for school so I could
return to work.
And then I was dying to retire.
And now, I am dying…
and suddenly realize I forgot to live.
