MINWAX® Technical Data Sheet
MINWAX® PRE-STAIN WOOD CONDITIONER
DESCRIPTION:_____________________________________
Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is specically designed for use before staining new or bare softwood
surfaces. It penetrates the grain of the wood to promote uniform acceptance of stain. Wood Conditioner pen-
etrates the pores of the wood, reducing the amount of stain the larger pores will absorb. This evens out the
absorption of stain, greatly reducing streaking and blotching.
RECOMMENDED USE:__________________________________
Designed for use on any soft or porous wood surface - Common examples include pine, r, and spruce (soft) or
maple, alder and aspen (porous).
To determine if you are working with softwood, press your ngernail against a hidden section of the wood. If
your nail leaves an impression or dent in the wood consider using the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Pre-Stain
should be used to avoid an uneven stain color. Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner may be used on all wood types but
may limit or reduce the overall stain color on hard woods and less porous wood types.
SURFACE PREPARATION:________________________________
Use on clean, raw wood surface. Remove all dust and debris using a soft cloth dampened with mineral spirits.
APPLICATION NOTES:___________________________________
1) Apply the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining on clean, raw wood, using a brush or cloth.
2) Allow the Wood Conditioner to penetrate 5-15 minutes, and then remove excess Conditioner with a
clean dry cloth.
3) The stain should be applied
within two hours of application of Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. For best
results, stain with Minwax Wood Finish, Minwax Gel Stain, Minwax Polyshades, or Minwax WoodSheen.
Note: Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner is not recommended for use with water-based stains. For the Min-
wax Water-Based Stains, pretreat wood with the Minwax Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner.
Note: For long-lasting protection, complete your project with Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane, Minwax
Polycrylic, or another ne Minwax protective clear nish.
Note: When using alder wood, it is recommended to let the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner set for 2 hours before
staining.
PRECAUTIONS: Do not allow Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to dry before staining. This will mini-
mize the wood texture and/or grain pattern as well as limiting the overall stain color penetration.
CLEANUP/STORAGE:__________________________________
Use mineral spirits, paint thinner or turpentine. Do not store near heat, sparks, open ame or other sources of
ignition. Close container after each use. Store only in original container. Keep out of reach of children.
