Consumer Information Disclosures:
Does the Health Psychology PhD (Clinical Health & Pediatric School concentrations) at ECU meet educational
requirements for licensure in different states within the USA?
The Clinical Health concentration of the Health Psychology PhD program is APA-accredited as a Clinical Psychology program, and
the Pediatric School concentration of the Health Psychology PhD program is APA-accredited as a School Psychology program.
Most state licensure boards accept APA-accredited programs as meeting their core educational requirements* for licensure.
To the best of our knowledge, and at last check (June 25, 2020), only the following states do not automatically accept APA-
accreditation: CA, NY, OK, WV, and WI. In reviewing the specifics of these states, we determined that we meet educational
requirements for OK and WI, and do not meet educational requirements for CA and NY. WV may have a psychology license
restricted to clinical or counseling psychology only (unclear if a PHD in school psychology is accepted). However, the Clinical
Health concentration would meet educational requirements in WV.
*NOTE: Educational requirements are only one part of a state’s licensure requirements. Every state differs in requirements
for hours of required predoctoral and postdoctoral supervised practice, written and/or oral examinations, specific one-
time trainings, criminal background checks, etc. Please check with specific state boards to learn their full requirements for
licensure.
Specific educational requirements for CA and NY follow:
California accepts accredited programs like ECU's APA-accredited program for core educational requirements; but California
also requires additional specific coursework or continuing education training prior to licensure. Specifically, CA licensure
requires 10 hours of training in human sexuality, 7 hours in child abuse assessment, 15 hours in spousal/partner abuse, detection
and intervention strategies, 10 hours in aging and long-term care, and 1 semester or 1 quarter term course in
alcoholism/chemical dependency detection and treatment. Students wishing to become licensed in California are advised to
work with their ECU program coordinator to tailor their electives to meet these additional training requirements to the extent
possible.
New York requires coursework of at least 3 graduate semester hours or 5 graduate quarter hours in each of the following 7
substantive content areas: biological basis of behavior; cognitive-affective basis of behavior; social basis of behavior; individual
differences; psychometrics; history and systems of psychology; and research design, methodology, and statistics.
(http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/psych/part52-10.htm). ECU's program is aligned with the most up-to-date standards of APA
accreditation, which does not require coverage of these 7 areas in separate courses. ECU does require 3-semester hour courses
in all these areas except psychometrics, which is integrated into other courses. New York does not specify that they accept APA
accreditation without additional course review. Therefore, students intending to apply for licensure in New York are advised to
work with ECU’s program coordinator to take a separate course in Psychometrics so as to meet New York's requirements.
