How GEMSAS will contact you
Email will be the primary means of contact between GEMSAS and applicants and there may also be a
need to send you letters by mail to your nominated postal address.
It is essential that you provide a current email address which will be valid from April 2022 to February
2023 and that you regularly check your emails, including your junk or spam folders. Expect emails from
GEMSAS at any time during the process but especially around the time of interview and
offers. Some of the participating universities will only communicate with applicants via email.
Some email messages may not be accepted or may be flagged as spam by some email providers (e.g.
Hotmail or Yahoo).
Applicants are advised to provide an email address other than their current university address (unless it
will be available until February 2023), Hotmail or Yahoo email addresses.
Neither GEMSAS nor the universities will be held responsible for undeliverable or unread email
communication.
Should you need to change your email or postal address, please do so in your GEMSAS user account.
Please save the following email addresses to your safe sender list:
info@gemsas.edu.au, GEMSAS-noreply@vtac.edu.au, noreply@gemsas.edu.au
Contact details for further enquiries
If you have further queries regarding the general application process, please contact GEMSAS:
info@gemsas.edu.au. Please check the GEMSAS website and FAQs for details before submitting your
query.
For detailed information on the GEMPASS Australia graduate entry* courses, as well as university
specific entry requirements, you should first check the Medicine Admissions Guide and the GEMSAS
and school websites. Links to the school websites can be found at www.gemsas.edu.au/medical-

Admission policies
Offers
Successful applicants will be given a firm date by which to accept an offer of a place and offers not accepted by that date,
according to the school’s instructions, will lapse.
If an applicant declines an offer of a place, or allows their offer to lapse, they will not be considered for
another place or receive another offer, in the 2023 intake.
If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and
you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your
application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon as possible.
Deferral
Deferral of a place is unlikely to be approved. However, some universities permit deferral, particularly to complete an
Honours year. Please consult the schools’ websites or discuss the possibility of being permitted to defer with the
universities to which you wish to apply.
Exclusion
An applicant who has been excluded from any university must indicate this when they apply. The schools may contact
applicants for further details on receipt of the application data.
Admission and application irregularities
Applicants should be aware that the presentation of forged documents is a criminal offence in Australia and that
universities may take appropriate action in such cases.
All tertiary study must be declared in the application. For the purpose of university admission, the withholding of
information and the submission of incorrect or misleading information are deemed fraudulent. Actions taken in such
cases may include cancellation of an application for admission, withdrawal of an offer of admission, or cancellation of
an enrolment.
Applicants who submit fraudulent documents, or otherwise seek to gain an advantage by fraudulent means, or who
engage in any misconduct during the application process may be banned from future applications through GEMSAS.
Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.
Schools’ policies
Each university may have its own additional admission policies (which may include policies on prior or current studies,
enrolment irregularities and/or transfers). To confirm if there are additional policies, review each schools entry in this
Guide and the websites of the schools to which you intend to apply.
Appeals process
Queries

Application Process
Information in this section is generally common to all the schools but is subject to the specific requirements outlined in
the school entries and on the school websites.
GEMSAS and the schools make every effort to ensure the accuracy of information provided in this Admissions Guide at
the time of publication. However, applicants must consult the GEMSAS and university websites for more detailed and
specific information and for updates.
There are three components of the application process:
1. GAMSAT
2. The application
3. Documentation
GAMSAT (https://gamsat.acer.org/)
Results from the following GAMSAT tests are valid for application in 2022, for entry in 2023: September 2020, March
2021, September 2021 or March 2022.
All applicants for Commonwealth Supported Places and other domestic places at graduate entry schools (i.e.
citizens/permanent residents of Australia and citizens of New Zealand) must have a current score on the Graduate
Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
GAMSAT results are valid for two years, i.e. if you sat the March test in 2022 you may use the results obtained to apply
for a graduate entry course commencing in 2023 and/or 2024. If you sit the September test in 2022 you may use the
results obtained to apply for a graduate entry course commencing in 2024 and/or 2025.
There is a very helpful table on page 76 of this guide and information that shows the validity of all the
GAMSAT tests at https://gamsat.acer.org/results/currency-of-results
Your GAMSAT results show a score for each of the three test Sections and an Overall Score. All GEMPASS Australia medical
schools (except the University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland and the University of Notre Dame Australia
Sydney and Fremantle) rank applicants using the Overall GAMSAT Score (with required minimum Section scores normally
around 50). The University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland and the University of Notre Dame Australia
Sydney and Fremantle, take an average of the three sections of the GAMSAT, rather than the Overall GAMSAT Score. The
acceptable GAMSAT scores may be different for each of the universities and may vary from year to year. When deciding
whether or not to submit an application, you are advised to make sure that your GAMSAT scores fall within the acceptable
ranges reported in the individual university entries in this Guide. You can evaluate your standing in relation to other
candidates who sat GAMSAT in the same year as you did, by consulting the chart included with your Statement of Results.
Please note that neither GEMSAS nor ACER staff have the authority to review individual GAMSAT transcripts or GAMSAT
results or to offer advice on the likelihood of selection. GAMSAT candidates are responsible for determining their
eligibility to apply.
Registration for the GAMSAT and application for admission to the graduate programs are separate
processes.
Application
Applications are made on-line through the ApplyGEMSAS.edu.au website. There is a link to this on the home page of the
GEMSAS.edu.au website.
Applicants are selected for interview based on one or more of the following criteria:
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 9 of 96
performance in GAMSAT;
performance in a qualifying/key degree (as indicated by GPA);
performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or personal statement where required;
performance in the Casper test where required.
Deakin University and the University of Melbourne combine the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview.
The GPA is weighted. The University of Melbourne uses an unweighted GAMSAT.
The Australian National University and The University of Western Australia combine both standardised GAMSAT and
standardised GPA when ranking applicants for interview.
Griffith University ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from a 50/50 combination of an
unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and the overall GAMSAT score.
The University of Queensland uses a minimum unweighted GPA of 5.0/7.0 and a minimum score of 50 in each of the three
sections of the GAMSAT as qualifying hurdles, then ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from
a 50/50 combination of an unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and an unweighted average GAMSAT score
rounded to six decimal places. If required, GPA will be used as a tie breaker.
The University of Wollongong uses a minimum weighted GPA of 5.5/7.0 and performance in the Casper test as qualifying
hurdles, then ranks applicants using 50% standardised GAMSAT results and 50% standardised portfolio/written
submission for interview offer.
The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Fremantle) and The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Sydney) rank applicants
on combined GPA, GAMSAT results and portfolio/written submission.
Macquarie University uses a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0/7.0 and a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections
and 50 overall in the GAMSAT and the personal statement as hurdles; then ranks applicants based on a selection rank
derived from a 50/50 combination of standardised weighted GPA and standardised overall GAMSAT score.

Bachelor degree and postgraduate study
All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year, of a Bachelor or Honours degree. Undergraduate and
postgraduate Australian degrees must be from a Commonwealth-accredited institution as listed by TEQSA (see
http://www.teqsa.gov.au/national-register). (NB. Wollongong require that qualifying/key degrees are from a
University and not a Higher Education Provider). Overseas degrees must be recognised by the Australian Department of
Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) (previously AEI-NOOSR) or UK ENIC (previously UK NARIC) as comparable to an
Australian Bachelor or Postgraduate degree. Your qualifications will be assessed for comparability as part of your
application process.
Please do not contact the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) for
assessment of your degree.
For those in the final year of study, satisfactory completion of the degree in 2022 will be a condition of entry. Note that
if you cannot complete and provide evidence of completion of your degree in the 2022 calendar year, any offer you have
received that is conditional upon completion of your current degree may be withdrawn.
Normally a bachelor degree of 3 years full time equivalent (FTE) study is required, this study can be part-time study and
does not need to be completed on a full time basis.
Applicants enrolled in a two-year degree, a three or four year embedded degree, graduate entry programs or one-
year conversion degree, or those who have completed a higher degree without a prior Bachelor degree should consult
their preferred school/s to ascertain eligibility. Note that not all schools accept such degrees. Please see individual
school entries in this Guide.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
GEMSAS will calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) from electronic copies of academic transcripts (from ARTS institutions)
or transcripts provided by the applicant. Scans of original hard-copy transcripts or an official and secure electronic copy
of your transcript will be needed if you have completed your degree or any part of your qualifying/key degree at an
overseas university or any university not included in the list of ARTS institutions in Appendix A.
Applicants may wish to calculate their GPA according to the instructions on the GEMSAS website
(www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations). A GPA calculator is available on the application page
(https://applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/gpa-calc) for use. Please note that any GPA calculated by an applicant will be
an estimated GPA and used only for the information of the applicant.
Exception: The University of Queensland (UQ), please check UQ’s school entry in this Guide for further information.
No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. GEMPASS Australia encourages individuals from
diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests.
Exception: Applicants to Medicine at the University of Queensland must have successfully completed approved prerequisite
studies in “Integrative Cell and Tissue Biology” and “Systems Physiology”. See the UQ school entry for details.
The GPA indicates the level of performance in the qualifying/key degree. There is no differentiation of GPA between
institutions or courses. It should be emphasised that a science major is not a prerequisite, and that academic excellence
in other areas, such as the humanities and social sciences, is encouraged and recognised.
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of
COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include
2020 results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 13 of 96
Interviews
The interview* is designed to assess qualities considered by the schools to be associated with success in both medical
school and later practice, and is conducted by trained interviewers. Academic performance is not discussed at the
interview. No domestic applicant will receive more than one interview offer from a medical school participating in
GEMSAS in the 2022 admissions round, for entry in 2023.
An exception is for applicants who qualify for the Guaranteed Entry Pathway, MD Rural Pathway or the Indigenous MD
Student Entry Pathway at the University of Melbourne. Guaranteed Entry Pathway, MD Rural Pathway and Indigenous
MD Student Entry Pathway applicants will be considered by the University of Melbourne separately to the GEMSAS
process and must apply directly to the University of Melbourne in accordance with instructions available at
https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/doctor-of-medicine/how-to-apply/
All other shortlisted, eligible applicants will be interviewed. Note that if Guaranteed Entry Full Fee eligible applicants
wish to be considered for CSP and Bonded Medical Places at the University of Melbourne, they must apply via GEMSAS.
If MD Rural Pathway applicants wish to also be considered for a non-bonded CSP and/or place outside of the rural
pathway, they must also apply via GEMSAS. If Guaranteed Entry Full Fee, MD Rural Pathway or Indigenous MD Student
Entry Pathway eligible applicants wish to be considered by the other medical schools, they are advised to consult the
relevant entries in this Guide for application details.
Selected applicants receive an invitation to interview by letter or email. This invitation must be presented on arrival at
the medical school for an in-person interview, together with a valid passport or current photo-bearing driver’s licence for
identification purposes.
Some schools require that you supply a passport photograph prior to interview. If this applies to you, you will be notified
when interview invitations are issued, with instructions on how and when to submit your digital photo.
Applicants must meet all expenses associated with attending an interview.
Applicants unsuccessful in receiving an interview at any of the medical schools they applied to will be notified by email by
the GEMSAS team. Applicants who were not interviewed will not participate in further processing.
*Interview dates may be subject to change
If you are eligible to be made an offer at a University that did not interview you, the
University reserves the right to call you for an informal conversation prior to offers being
made. This is to ensure that the applicant is aware of specific course and University
requirements. This conversation does not constitute an interview or indicate an offer of a
place.
Offers
Selection into graduate entry medicine is based on up to five criteria:
performance in GAMSAT;
performance as indicated by GPA. Please see school entries for details about qualifying/key degrees and GPA
calculations;
performance in interview;
performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or personal statement;
performance in the Casper test where required.
The way in which each university combines these criteria when making their final offers varies. For more information
refer to the individual university entries which begin on page 22 of this Guide. Alternatively, you can consult each
university’s website for detailed information. Links are available from http://www.gemsas.edu.au/medical-schools/.
A successful application may lead to an offer of one of a range of places, including bonded and full-fee places. When
you apply you will be asked (for each school on your preference list), to choose (and for some schools, rank) the types of
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 14 of 96
places you will be prepared to accept. Selection is based on ranked lists and quotas. The quota (i.e. number of places)
available for each offer type is restricted. To maximise your chances of receiving an offer at the schools of your choice,
consider listing all types of places. If you omit (for instance) the Bonded Medical Program (BMP) offer type and you are
ranked to get a BMP offer, it will not be made and you’ll drop down to your next preferred school for consideration.
Please read carefully all the information about bonded places on the DoH website at
https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/bonded-medical-program.
When allocations are being made, schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using that
schools ranked list in order: CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). Some schools will ask you to rank all offer types and some
will just want you to indicate which offer types you are prepared to accept if offered. To list only one offer type means
you limit the available places that can be offered to you.
Individual School Details:
For The University of Queensland you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for, however no
consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the order of CSP first and
BMP second.
For the University of Melbourne you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will not be
considered for a type of place that you have not listed, however no consideration is given to the order of preferred
offer types listed when offers are made. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP, BMP, and FEE, with the most
highly ranked applicants being offered CSP places and so on down the merit order until all vacancies are filled. It is
important that applicants who are not in a position to pay for a full fee (FEE) paying place DO NOT list this type of
place in their application for the University of Melbourne. Once an applicant is offered a FEE place it is not possible
to swap into a CSP or BMP.
For The University of Western Australia you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for, however
no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the following order:
CSP then BMP.
ANU will allocate place types based on the ranking of the applicant and their preferences.
For the University of Wollongong you must specify the types of places you wish to be considered for in your preferred
order. You must also note your preference for the Wollongong campus or the Shoalhaven campus (or indicate no
preference). Allocations will be according to applicant rank and preference.
For Deakin University you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will not be considered
for a type of place that you have not listed. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP and BMP, with the most
highly ranked applicants being offered CSP places and so on down the merit order until all vacancies are filled.
For Griffith University you must specify the types of places you wish to be considered for in your preferred order. You
must also note your preference (1 and 2 or no preference) for the Gold Coast campus and the Sunshine Coast Health
Institute teaching location. Allocations will be according to applicant rank and preferences, however your preference
is not guaranteed.
For The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle and Sydney, applicants must specify the types of places they
wish to be considered for. Applicants will not be considered for a place they have not selected. Offers will be made in
the following order: CSP first and BMP second for Fremantle campus. CSP first, BMP second and Full-Fee third for
Sydney campus.
For Macquarie University all places are Full-Fee paying and will be allocated based on the ranking of the applicant.
If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive
another offer.

BMP Bonded Medical P rogram
The Bonded Medical Program (BMP) is a Federal Government initiative which aims to provide more Australian trained
doctors where there are workplace shortages particularly (but not limited to) rural and remote Australia.
Information about this scheme can be found on the Australian Government Department of Health website
(https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/bonded-medical-program). The BMP is open to all first year
medical students who are Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia or Australian permanent humanitarian
visa holders.
Any applicant who has previously studied in a Bonded Medical Place at any University would need to have discharged any
obligations they had under their agreement with the Government, including repaying any amounts owing, before being
eligible to be offered a medicine CSP or BMP via GEMSAS. If you have previously studied in a BMP, please check and
confirm that you are eligible prior to submitting your application.
Applicants in special categories
Applicants in the following categories should refer to the medical school websites, the entry requirements section (from
page 22) and on pages 9 11 and 17:
Combined Degree applicants;
Indigenous applicants;
Rural resident applicants;
Other special sub-quota applicants.

Rurality
Please note process updates for 2022 to the:
MMM 2019 classification map, and
documentation requirements.
If you have resided in an Australian rural area, MM 2 to 7, for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively, you may
be eligible for consideration in rural schemes and sub-quotas. You will need to complete the Rurality question in the
Application Form and submit supporting documentation. For information about rural sub quotas or bonus points please
view the schools' entry requirements pages.
The Modified Monash Model (MMM) is how the Department of Health define whether a location is a city, rural, remote
or very remote. The model measures remoteness and population size on a scale of Modified Monash (MM) category MM
1 to MM 7. The Modified Monash Model (MMM) 2019 has been updated to align with the latest available census data.
The model was developed to better target health workforce programs to attract health professionals to more remote and
smaller communities. The MMM classifies metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas according to geographical
remoteness, as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and town size. The most recent classification
(Modified Monash Model 2019), based on 2016 census data, is the one by which we will assess your rurality.
The Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) will use these guidelines in the processing of Rurality
Claims.
The Modified Monash Model (MM 2019) is made up of 7 categories:
MM 1 Metropolitan areas
MM 2 Regional centres
MM 3 Large rural towns
MM 4 Medium rural towns
MM 5 Small rural towns
MM 6 Remote communities
MM 7 Very remote communities
If you have resided in a MM 2 to 7 area for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively and wish to be considered for
rural schemes and sub-quotas, you will need to provide documentary evidence.
The Australian Government currently defines Rural origin’ as residency for at least 10 years cumulatively or any 5 years
consecutively in a MM2-7 area.
You can check your MMM status at (select Modified Monash Model 2019): https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-
and-tools/health-workforce-locator/health-workforce-locator
Acceptable supporting documents include:
You, the applicant, must provide a statutory declaration in your name. If you are providing bills or invoices in a
parent’s name, from when you were under 18, then both a statutory declaration from a parent and one from
yourself will be required. The statutory declaration/s must be accompanied by either:
1. Professional supporting letters from a GP/dentist, bank, school, university or workplace.
Professional supporting letters must be dated, signed, include your rural residential address and rural
address history, and the dates that you resided at the address.
The professional supporting letters must detail how you are known to the author of the letter and
you must be known in a professional capacity e.g. patient of the GP or student of the
school/university.
The GP practice/school/bank/work place/university should be in or around the same rural area you
are providing support for residing in. If not, the letter needs to clearly detail how the author is able
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 18 of 96
to confirm the rural address history and time periods. The professional letter of support must be
official on letterhead and include, if from a GP their AHPRA registration number or official practice
stamp.
OR;
2. Documents to prove residence such as invoices for telephone, utilities, or bank statements showing your
(or your family’s) address, can be provided.
If you were over 18 at the time, bills and invoices will only be accepted if in your name.
Rates notices are not acceptable.
An online printed invoice will only be acceptable if dated the year it was issued. E.g. a bank statement
must be dated the year you are supporting (i.e. dated 19 July 2017 if you are supporting the year
2017, it cannot be dated 2021 if you are supporting the year 2017).
The professional letters of support and statutory declarations must include the rural address history and time
periods.
Please note:
All rural residing should be included in the online application but supporting documentation only needs to support
5 years consecutive or 10 years cumulative rural residing.
School reports are not sufficient documentation as we need to clearly see your rural residential address
Please ensure your documentation supports 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively of rural residing and
includes the cover sheet you will print off when you submit your on-line application.
You cannot claim time in the future as part of the 5 or 10 years, as there is no way to establish proof that you will
continue to reside in a rural setting.
Time spent at a holiday home (second residence) or during school holidays in a rural setting, will not be
considered.
If selecting 5 years consecutive then the supporting documentation must support 5 full years (documentation is
required for every year) and must be consecutive.
If selecting 10 years cumulative then the supporting documentation must support 10 full years and
documentation will be needed for each time period, one document for the start of each time period and one for
the end of each time period (documentation is required for every year).
An official statutory declaration template must be used, either your state or territory one or a Commonwealth
one.

Doctor of Medicine
and Surgery
The Medicinae ac Chirurgiae Doctoranda (MChD), Latin for Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, is a
comprehensive and varied four year program for graduate students looking to enter the
rewarding field of medicine. It aims to produce graduates who are committed to compassionate,
ethical health care and the expansion of medical knowledge. The MChD is a Level 9 Extended
Masters qualification as defined by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
Bachelor Degree
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor degree or be completing the final year of a Bachelor
degree at the time of application.
The Bachelor degree must be an AQF Level 7 qualification (at minimum) and must be comprised
of at least three full-time equivalent years (3.0 FTE) worth of study.
Two-year accelerated Bachelor degrees (i.e. where 3.0 FTE worth of study is fast-tracked over two
years) will be accepted if the degree is due to be completed by 31 December in the year of
application. Bachelor degrees containing only 2.0 FTE worth of study will not be accepted.
The ANU Medical School does not accept conversion degrees. A conversion degree is defined as a
Bachelor degree that includes more than 0.375 FTE of credit from previous studies undertaken
below AQF Level 7 (e.g. a Bachelor degree containing prior credit from a TAFE certificate/diploma).
Bachelor degrees completed in Australia must be from a Commonwealth-accredited institution.
Bachelor degrees completed overseas must be from a recognised institution and must be
equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree, as determined by the Australian Government
Department of Education, Skills and Employment.
The ANU Medical School welcomes graduates from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds and
considers all applicants equally. There is no preferred Bachelor degree or prerequisite subjects for
entry to the MChD program.
Applicants who have completed a higher-level qualification but do not hold a recognised Bachelor
degree are not eligible for consideration. Standalone Honours, Graduate Diplomas and/or Masters
by Coursework qualifications will only be accepted askey degrees if the applicant has already
completed a recognised Bachelor degree prior to undertaking the higher-level study.
Applicants whose Bachelor degree was awarded more than 10 years ago will need to meet
further study requirements to be eligible to apply. Please read the Currency of Qualification’
section for more information.
GPA Calculation
The ANU Medical School uses a weighted GPA calculation for admission to the MChD program.
This means your most recent results are weighted more heavily:
Final GPA Year (most recent) = Weighted x3
Final-1 GPA Year (2nd most recent) = Weighted x2
Final-2 GPA Year (3rd most recent) = Weighted x1
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 23 of 96
A minimum weighted GPA of 5.6 is required to be considered for interview.
The GPA calculation is based on three years of full-time equivalent study (3.0 FTE) in your most
recent eligible degree (or combination of degrees, if applicable). For the purpose of the GPA
calculation, eligible degrees include Bachelor, Honours, Graduate Diploma and Masters by
Coursework programs. Course results from eligible degrees will be included in the GPA calculation
if the degree is already completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of
application.
If your most recent eligible degree comprises less than 3.0 FTE worth of study, course results from
your next-most-recent eligible degree(s) may be used to make up the remainder of the 3.0 FTE.
For example, if an applicant has completed a 1 year standalone Honours degree after their
Bachelor degree, their GPA would be calculated using 1.0 FTE worth of results from the Honours
program (Final GPA Year) and the remaining 2.0 FTE worth of results would be taken from the last
two years of the Bachelor degree (Final-1 and Final-2 GPA Years).
If the duration of a degree exceeds the equivalent of 3 full-time years of study, only the courses
comprising the last 3.0 FTE worth of study will be used in the GPA calculation. For example, for a
5 year combined degree, the GPA calculation will only include the last 3 years of study and will
not include the first 2 years.
Where an applicant is completing the final year of their degree in 2022, the current year of study
will only be included in the GPA calculation if at least 0.375 FTE worth of graded course results
from Semester/Trimester 1 2022 are available to be used in the calculation. If at least 0.375 FTE
worth of graded results are not yet available, the Final GPA Year will be excluded from the
calculation and the GPA will be calculated using only the Final-1 (x2) and Final-2 (x1) GPA Years.
Ungraded Pass (UGP/CRS) results will not be included in the GPA calculation. We will include UGP
passes in the credit count for a particular GPA year, however, they are excluded from the
calculation and that particular GPA year’ will be calculated based on the available graded course
results only.
An applicant must have a minimum of 0.375 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) worth of graded results
available for a GPA to be calculated for that particular GPA ‘year’, i.e.: if 1.0FTE is the equivalent
of 8 courses (or 48 credits with 6 credits per course), then using this module, you must have a
minimum of 3 courses (0.375 FTE) that are graded (not UGP/CRS) for that year.
However it is important to note that if you have equal to or greater than 1.0 FTE worth of
Ungraded pass results across your entire qualifying degree this will be dealt with on a case by case
basis and may result in the degree being deemed ineligible.
Please note Graduate Certificates, Masters by Research, PhDs, non-award study and study
completed below AQF Level 7 will not be included in the GPA calculation. However, completion
of some higher-level qualifications may attract a percentage bonus. Please refer to the Bonuses’
section for further information.
Currency of
qualification
Applicants are required to have completed their Bachelor degree within 10 years of the date of
application. The 10 years is measured from the date your degree was officially completed (i.e. the
date of conferral), not the date of your graduation ceremony. If your Bachelor degree was
completed more than 10 years ago, the 10 year rule’ may be waived if you have undertaken
additional undergraduate or postgraduate study in the intervening period. This must be evidenced
by successful completion of at least 0.5 years of full-time equivalent study (0.5 FTE) in a
Commonwealth-accredited program at Bachelor level or higher (as defined by the Australian
Qualifications Framework) in the 10 years prior to the date of application.
A study load of 0.5 FTE is usually equivalent to one semester of full-time study or two semesters
of part-time study.
GAMSAT
Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT and a
minimum Overall Score of 55 to be considered for an interview.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 24 of 96
Bonuses
Honours: A percentage bonus of 2% may be awarded for a standalone Honours degree if the
qualification is already complete or due to be completed in the year of application. The bonus
applies to standalone Honours degrees only. Embedded and Professional Honours programs are
included in the GPA calculation but do not receive the percentage bonus.
Masters by Research or PhD: A percentage bonus may be awarded for a Masters by Research
(2%) or PhD (4%) if the qualification is completed prior to the date of application.
Note: The percentage bonus is applied to the combined GPA/GAMSAT score. Applicants must
meet the individual GPA and GAMSAT minimum requirements before they can be eligible for a
bonus.
Applicants cannot accumulate additional bonuses for completing more than one of the degrees
listed above. If an applicant has completed more than one qualification that is eligible for a
bonus, only the highest bonus will apply.
Indigenous
Applicants
The ANU Medical School encourages applications from people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait
Islander background and has a dedicated Indigenous entry pathway for the MChD program. Each
year, there are reserved places in the MChD through the Indigenous entry pathway.
Applicants from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent can apply directly to the ANU by
completing the application process as outlined on the ANU website:
https://health.anu.edu.au/study/doctor-medicine-and-surgery#acton-tabs-link--tabs-
degree_program_apply-middle-3
Rural entry
In line with Federal Government initiatives, the ANU Medical School offers 29% of its domestic
places to students from a rural background. GEMSAS will use the Modified Monash Model (MMM)
system to determine if applicants meet the rural background criteria. If your primary place of
residence has been in an Australian rural area (MM2 to 7) for 5 years consecutively or 10 years
cumulatively, you may be eligible for consideration in the rural sub-quota. You can check the
MMM classification of your address by visiting the Department of Health’s online Health
Workforce Locator.
To be considered in the rural sub-quota, applicants must answer the Rurality question when
completing their GEMSAS application and must provide supporting documentation to GEMSAS.
Interview
Applicants are ranked for interview consideration based on a composite score derived from the
standardised weighted GPA and standardised Overall GAMSAT score, using a 50/50 weighting.
Offers
Offers of a place in the program will be based on a total combined score derived from the
interview score (weighted 50%) and the composite GPA/GAMSAT score used for the interview
ranking (weighted 50%). Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission into the
program.
An offer made to an applicant who is studying the final year of their key degree in 2022 will be
conditional on the successful completion of the degree. Evidence of successful completion must
be received by GEMSAS no later than 31 December 2022. Applicants must meet the minimum
weighted GPA threshold of 5.6 upon completion.
All students offered a place at the ANU Medical School are required to meet the mandatory
screening and vaccination requirements for the ANU, ACT Health and NSW Health. Students who
receive an offer of place to the MChD program will receive the screening and vaccination
booklet with their offer letter. All requirements included in the booklet must be completed and
evidence provided prior to commencement of the program.
Deferral
An offer of a place is only valid for the year in which it is offered. The Medical School will not
consider deferral of enrolment for students unless exceptional circumstances arise that were not
foreseeable at the time of application.
Conjoint
MChD/PhD
The ANU Medical School offers the opportunity for high achieving students to undertake a
conjoint Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) conjoint program.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 25 of 96
This program caters for students who have a desire to enter the medical profession but also
possess a keen interest in cutting-edge research. The conjoint program is available for students
who qualify for entry to a PhD program (H1 Honours or equivalent) and who achieve a higher
level performance in the Advanced Research Project course and/or subject to the approval of
the Director of the Medical School.
Applications and selection for the conjoint program is completed during the second year of the
MChD program, therefore no application is required prior to starting the program.

(accelerated degrees (3FTE) completed over 2 years, however, are accepted).
Any credit from an International Baccalaureate will also not be accepted.

the final three full-time equivalent years of the most recent study. Years are
progressively weighted x1, x2 and x3, to give greater weight to the most recent results.
2020 Calendar year results will not be used in the GPA calculation. Applicants who
completed their qualifying degree in 2020 will have a GPA calculated based on the
previous two most recent years of study.
Applicants who studied in the final year of their most recent degree in 2020 and who
completed at least 0.25FTE of their final year requirements prior to 2020, will have their
GPA calculated as Final - 2 x1, Final - 1 x2 and Final x3.

calculated from the Final - 1 and Final - 2 years only. Years will be progressively weighted
x5 and x1 to give greater weight to the most recent results.
An Honours year (embedded or standalone) will be considered and may count as your

calendar year enrolled subjects will not be used (regardless of subject or degree
completion/conferral in 2021).
Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework qualifications
successfully completed by 31 July 2022 will also be used towards GPA calculations.
Applicants should note that 2020 calendar year results will not be used.
Note: A GPA year must have at least 0.25FTE of graded results.
Early exit from a combined degree
Applicants will meet Deakin University’s admission requirement if they have completed
3FTE when taking an early exit from a combined degree.
If the applicant takes an early exit from the combined degree, the GPA will be
recalculated and if applicable, made a conditional offer of a place. This is dependent on

assessing qualifications will not be accepted. All documentation must be submitted with the
application.

Applicants will be invited to GUMSAA based on an interview selections rank derived from a
50:50 combination of the unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and the overall
GAMSAT score. Entry is competitive and a GPA required for interview selection is likely to be
significantly higher than 5.0 out of 7.0. A high GAMSAT can offset a slightly lower GPA and vice
versa. As a result of using a 50:50 GPA/GAMSAT selections methodology, there is no discrete
cut-off point for GAMSAT.
GUMSAA for 2023 entry is scheduled for Wednesday 21 September 2022 and will be held online.

Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 40 of 96
Macquarie University will calculate a GPA including Graduate Diploma and Coursework
Masters, if this degree will be completed by 31 December in the year of application. Completed
Higher Degree Research Masters and PhD will be used in GPA calculations. The GPA calculation
considers full time equivalent (FTE) years of study. The weightings used give higher level results
greater value.
The following method of GPA calculation will be used when a qualifying degree was completed
in 2020:
- All graded unit results from 2020 will be included in the calculation using the normal
weightings (see below).
- Ungraded units from 2020 will be excluded from the GPA calculation.
Applicants with a bachelor degree only will have their GPA calculated with the following
weightings:
- Final year (most recent FTE year of study) = x 3
- Final-1 (second most recent FTE year of study) = x 2
- Final-2 (third most recent FTE year of study) = x 1
Applicants with a bachelor degree and standalone honours year will have their GPA calculated
with the following weightings:
- Final year (honours) = x 3
- Final-1 (most recent FTE year of bachelor degree) = x 2
- Final-2 (second most recent FTE year of bachelor degree) = x 1
- If there are results for less than 0.5 FTE in the Honours degree from semester 1
completed, the Bachelor degree will be used to calculate the GPA. The Honours
degree will be the key degree and a conditional offer will be issued on completion of
Honours.
Applicants with postgraduate coursework (Graduate Diploma and Masters) will have their GPA
calculated with the following weightings:
- Postgraduate coursework (considered as whole) = x 3
- Final-1 (most recent FTE year of bachelor degree or standalone honours year) = x 2
- Final-2 (second most recent FTE year of bachelor degree or most recent year of
bachelor degree if honours is used) = x 1
Applicants with completed postgraduate research (Higher Degree Research Masters or PhD)
will have their GPA calculated with the following weightings:
- Postgraduate research (considered as whole, given maximum GPA value of 7.0) = x 3
- Final-1 (most recent FTE year of bachelor degree or standalone honours year) = x 2
- Final-2 (second most recent FTE year of bachelor degree or most recent year of
bachelor degree if honours is used) = x 1
Note that non-award units will not be used as part of the GPA calculation.

Melbourne MD
Selection Policies
All applicants to the University of Melbourne are asked to refer to the MD Selection Guidelines
http://go.unimelb.edu.au/m7ki for detailed selection policy information.
Clinical School Zone
allocation
Most of the Melbourne MD is delivered through clinical schools based within health
services. Applicants are asked to choose their preferred clinical school zone (i.e. rural or
metropolitan). Allocation to zones is based on a random order list and applicant preference,
although those whose MD offer results from their rural origins will be allocated to the rural
zone. Government regulations prevent international students from being placed in the rural
clinical school zone. A successful applicant’s acceptance of their offer of a place in the course is
also acceptance of their allocated clinical school zone.
Successful applicants will also be asked to express their preferences for the specific clinical
school they would like to attend within their allocated zone. A randomised process will allocate
students to their highest-ranked clinical school at which a place is available, while ensuring a
similar mix of student characteristics (such as gender and fee type) at each site. Information
on each clinical school is available from: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/hht6
Bachelor Degree/
GPA/ GAMSAT
A minimum GPA of 5 and a minimum GAMSAT Score of 50 in each of the three sections of the
GAMSAT is required. These are minimum requirements only, and selection into the course is
highly competitive.
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is measured by considering the last 3 years of the
applicant’s undergraduate coursework studies (only including Honours where the Honours
Degree is completed by mid-year in the year of application, and the results are available for
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 45 of 96
selection). GPA years will be weighted: the final-minus-2 x 1, the final-minus-1 x 2 and the
final x 2.
If an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, then GPA
weightings will be applied by weighting the first of the final three pre-honours undergraduate
years, as outlined above.
An undergraduate degree is defined as a degree of at least three years duration when studied
full-time, or equivalent, from a recognised university. However, accelerated entry and
conversion degrees may be accepted, depending on the level and extent of credited study, at
the discretion of the selection committee. GPAs may be adjusted in the applicant’s favour for
applicants with a completed PhD or Masters qualification in a related discipline (quotas apply).
Results for 2020 subjects completed before the COVID-19 pandemic and results
for honours subjects completed in 2020 will be included in the GPA calculations
for entry to Doctor of Medicine program. All other 2020 subject results will be
excluded for entry. This is applicable from 2022 for all forthcoming intakes.
Results for subjects completed in 2021 will be included in GPA calculations for
2023 and all future intakes.
Currency of
qualification
Undergraduate degree must have been completed within 10 years of commencing the Doctor
of Medicine. For applicants whose most recently completed undergraduate degree was
completed 10 or more years before 1 January 2023 in the year of application, a Graduate
Diploma, Master or PhD degree, or equivalent, must have been completed within the last 10
years.
MCAT
Only international students who reside outside of Australia at the time of application may
apply using an MCAT score.

Offers
Interview offers will be made on the basis of a combined ranked list using weighted GPA and
the GAMSAT score (where each of the three sections is weighted equally). The GPA and
GAMSAT score are weighted equally to create the ranked list for interview.
Course offers will be made on the basis of a combined ranked list where ranks by GAMSAT will
be weighted by 25%, GPA by 25%, and interview by 50%. Eligible Guaranteed Entry and
Indigenous applications will not be subject to ranking. Eligible rural background applicants may
be selected above higher-ranked applicants, in order to satisfy the University’s rural-

willing and able to commit to the full duration of the Doctor of Medicine program at that
campus.
Selection Process
Candidates are ranked for offer on the following criteria:
Notre Dame Portfolio: Personal qualities, motivation to study medicine and to study at Notre
Dame Fremantle;
Unweighted average GAMSAT Score: Notre Dame will take an average of the three sections
of GAMSAT. Applicants must achieve a total score of at least 52 with a minimum of 50 in
each subsection;
Grade Point Average (GPA): Applicants must achieve an overall GPA score of at least 5.2; and

regularly.
Qualifying Bachelor
Degree
Applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of, a minimum three-year full-time
equivalent (FTE) undergraduate degree (including an Honours year if applicable.)
The following degrees may also be used as qualifying degrees, subject to the conditions stated:
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 51 of 96
Vertical Double/ Combined Degrees
An undergraduate/postgraduate combined degree - consisting of at least two undergraduate
years plus at least one postgraduate year - must be completed by 31 December 2022.
Completion of the undergraduate component alone will be deemed insufficient, unless the
applicant has been approved by the conferring institution to exit the qualification early with a
three-year FTE degree.
Where an undergraduate/postgraduate degree has been used as the qualifying undergraduate
degree, and it is the most recent study undertaken, all available units will be used in calculating
the GPA.
Accelerated Degrees
An accelerated degree consists of three trimesters per year completed in two years. Applicants in
their final year of an accelerated degree must be due to complete their degree by 31 December
2022. Where an accelerated degree is later completed as a standard duration undergraduate
degree, the most recent three years of study will be used in the GPA calculation.
Conversion Degrees
A conversion degree will be eligible for use as a qualifying degree if it is preceded by a relevant
diploma or succeeded by a completed minimum one-year full-time (1FTE) postgraduate degree in
a related discipline or field.
Other Accepted Study
Applicants who have completed a combined minimum of three years study at AQF Level 7 or
higher in a single discipline or in related fields may also be eligible, provided the
qualifications/degrees are complete at the time of application.
Prior Credit towards Qualifying Bachelor Degree
Applicants who have completed a three-year full-time equivalent (FTE) Bachelor degree but have
been awarded credit for prior academic learning are generally required to have completed at least
two years of full-time study within their awarding institution. We also recognise up to one year of
prior credit, from below AQF Level 7 study, towards the completion of an undergraduate degree.
If you don’t meet the above requirement your qualification may be deemed ineligible for the
purpose of admission to the medical course.
Applicants in the Final Year of the Qualifying Degree
Applicants who apply using their current enrolled minimum three-year full-time equivalent (FTE)
undergraduate degree will be expected to successfully complete all requirements of the degree,
including any Study Abroad components, as at 31 December 2022. Where deferred or
supplementary exams are scheduled after 31 December 2022, the applicant will be deemed not
to have successfully completed all requirements of the degree as at 31 December 2022. As such,
applicants must note the stipulated deadlines carefully if and when requesting deferred or
supplementary exams. The MD program at Notre Dame commences in early 2023. As such, an
extension cannot be granted in any circumstances. Where an applicant is in the final year of
study, the final-year GPA will be calculated based on the completed units within their final year.
For example, if 0.25FTE units have been completed and the applicant is expected to complete
0.75FTE that year in order to complete their degree, their final year GPA will be calculated using
0.25FTE of units. Some institutions have decided to change their grading system to pass/fail for
either Semester One, 2020 or for the whole of 2020. These qualifications will still be accepted
provided they remain a minimum three-year full-time equivalent (FTE) undergraduate degree, or
other accepted qualifying degree. An applicant’s GPA will be calculated in line with the
appropriate rules. Results for Semester One, 2022, must be available by 31 July 2022 to be used
in the GPA calculation for Interview selection.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 52 of 96
Offers to candidates completing their degree in 2022 will be conditional upon maintenance of a
competitive GPA and documentary evidence to GEMSAS of degree completion prior to 31
December 2022. Where relevant, this documentary evidence includes results from all Study
Abroad components of their degree. As such, applicants must note their international
institution’s timeframe for supplying results if they are taking part in Study Abroad.
GPA Calculation
An applicant’s GPA will, subject to the exclusions below, be calculated on the most recent 3-FTE
years of study of completed/ completing degrees at AQF Level 7 or above. All grades/results
(including fail grades, if applicable) from the most recent 3-FTE years of completed/ completing
study will be used.
Not-for-Degree and Audit study that is not credited to a degree will not be used for the purposes
of GPA calculation.
GPAs will be calculated using Bachelor degrees, Honours (excluding clinical and professional
honours), Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework only. Graduate
Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework qualifications must be completed by 31
July 2022 to be used in the GPA calculation. Qualifications at Bachelor level completed in addition
to an accepted qualifying degree must be completed by 31 July 2022 to be used in the GPA
calculation.
Masters by research, Doctoral Degrees, clinical and professional honours, and study below
Bachelor AQF Level 7 will not be considered for the purpose of GPA calculation.
Qualifications must be completed at a TEQSA accredited institution (or for equivalent
international qualifications, defined by the Australian Department of Education, Skills and
Employment (DESE) (previously AEI-NOOSR).
GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x 1, Final-minus-1 x 2 and Final x 3, to give
greatest weight to the most recent results. If Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters
by coursework degrees are to be included in an applicant’s GPA calculation, the GPA calculation
will not be weighted. The results from each of the applicant’s three most recent years of eligible
study would be of equal weight.
For more information regarding GPA calculations and this terminology please refer to the GPA
Guides on the GEMSAS Website: http://www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations/
Masters by Research or Doctoral degrees, classified by the host institution as Course Complete

Verification
In fairness to all applicants, all information and documentation (Material) submitted in support of
an application will be subject to strict verification and checking processes. A selection of verifiers
will be contacted to confirm the Material of applicants. In the event that any Material is not
verified, the University may request further additional documentation, seek clarification and/or
take any action in relation to the application, at any stage in the process that it deems
appropriate. As GEMSAS will not be accepting hard copy transcripts to verify documents in 2022,
successful applicants who attended non-ARTS institutions will need to provide hard copies of
original transcripts to the Notre Dame Admissions team for assessment before enrolment is
accepted. Please do not provide documents directly to Notre Dame unless specifically requested.
Feedback
Notre Dame Sydney will not provide feedback on any portion of the application. The average GPA
and GAMSAT scores of the successful cohort will be published.

Bachelor Degree/
GPA
Applicants must have achieved a UQ equivalent GPA of 5.0/7.0 or above in the designated key
degree.
PLEASE NOTE: Competitive applicants with a GEMSAS GPA of between 5.0/7.0 and 5.75/7.0 will
be reviewed to determine equivalency to the UQ GPA assessment method as outlined in Table 2
(for 2023) of PPL 3.40.06 Undergraduate, Doctor of Medicine, Non-Award and CSP Admissions.
There will be no variation to the GPA assessment methodology for periods of study that were
affected by COVID-19.
The first key degree must be a Bachelor level degree which has a minimum standard duration of
six semesters of full time study (i.e. 3.0 FTE). Bachelor degrees which have a standard duration of
less than six semesters of full time study will not be classified as an approved first key degree.
Postgraduate degrees and shorter duration bachelor level degrees can only be accepted as a
subsequent’ key degree after an applicant has previously completed a Bachelor degree of the
required minimum standard duration.
A subsequent key degree can be a new bachelor level degree, or an approved Honours,
Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters or Doctoral degree after completion of an
acceptable first Bachelor degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most
recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment.
A new key degree must be completed at the end of Semester 1 in the year of application to be
included in the assessment. Current study assessments are only available for applicants who are
currently completing their first key degree.
Undergraduate degrees delivered below the bachelor level (AQF Level 7) and graduate
certificates are not classified as key degrees. Grades from these degrees will only be included in
the GPA assessment when they have contributed credit towards the designated key degree.
The GPA for the UQ preference is calculated over the entire duration of the degree. This means
that grades are not divided into years for a ‘count back assessment of the GPA. As a result, UQ’s
GPA assessments are weighted by credit value of the subjects rather than the year in which the
subjects were completed.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 61 of 96
All subjects studied while enrolled in the key degree are included in the GPA calculation,
whether or not they counted towards the award of the degree. Any other study for which credit
was given towards the degree must also be included, this includes failed attempts at subjects in
earlier degrees that were repeated and passed to attain credit in the new degree.
Where the degree was completed as part of a combined, dual or parallel degree, all subjects
studied towards both degrees are included in the calculation of the GPA. This includes dual
bachelor/master degrees that have an integrated delivery of content.
Letter grades are used in all GPA calculations by The University of Queensland. Percentages are
only used when equivalent letter grades are unavailable.
Completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degrees are allocated a
deemed GPA of 7.0. An Honours degree awarded with class I, IIA, IIB or III, will receive a GPA as
per the Honours category in the conversion table on page 94.
First key degrees are often incomplete at the time of offers. Applicants are advised not to
include a UQ preference if their first key degree cannot be completed in full with a minimum
GPA of 5.0/7.0 before 31 December in the year of application.
Current study
assessments
UQ will only consider a current study assessment where all of the following conditions apply:
1. The applicant is currently completing their first key degree, and
2. The majority of finalised grades are available for the first key degree, and
3. The progressive GPA of the first key degree is above 5.0, and
4. It is possible for the applicant to complete the first key degree before 31 December in the
year of application.
Any offer made based on a current study assessment will require completion of the first key
degree prior to 31 December in the year of application with the required minimum overall GPA
of 5.0. If either the completion requirement or the GPA requirement are not met, the conditional
offer will be rescinded and the applicants place in the MD program will be cancelled.
Currency of
qualification
Applicants whose most recent key degree was completed more than 10 years prior to
commencement in the MD may be considered if they have successfully completed the
equivalent of at least one full time equivalent semester (i.e. 0.50 FTE years) of graded tertiary
level coursework study with an assessed GPA of at least 5.0/7.0 in the 10 year period prior to the
intake they are applying for.
Any credit received from prior studies or work experience will not contribute to the 0.5 FTE
requirement or the assessed GPA. If more than 0.5 FTE additional study has been undertaken in
the previous 10 years, the whole period of the additional study will be included in the GPA
assessment of the activation studies.
GAMSAT
Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each section. Applicants with any section
score below 50 are deemed ineligible. UQ uses an unweighted GAMSAT score (an average of the
three sections rounded to six decimal places).
Prerequisite
subjects and
equivalents
From 2022, applicants require two science prerequisites in cell and tissue biology and systems
physiology completed at second year undergraduate level.
A table of approved prerequisite equivalent subjects can be found at:
https://medicine.uq.edu.au/future-students/changes-md-admissions/doctor-medicine-
prerequisites
Prerequisite subjects must have been completed within 10 years of commencement in the
Doctor of Medicine. For example, if applying for the 2023 intake, the prerequisite subjects must
be completed from 2013 onwards.
Applicants must submit documentation DIRECTLY to the University of Queensland by 1 May in
the year of application for assessment of prerequisite equivalency if the subjects you have
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 62 of 96
studied are not included in the published lists. Applicants who submit complete documentation
by 1 May will be advised of the subject assessment before the closing date for applications. For
further information see the above website.
Please note, for submissions after the 1 May you may not receive the outcome of the
assessment before the GEMSAS application deadline and there is no guarantee that your courses
will be approved.
Applicants who have not submitted documentation of prerequisites by 1 May OR have not
demonstrated equivalence as part of their GEMSAS application (e.g. evidence of relevant
completed subjects) will be deemed to have failed the prerequisite requirements and will not be
eligible for selection into the MD.
If you have not completed the prerequisite subjects or equivalent at the time of application, you
must enrol in your prerequisite subjects by the end of July in the year of application, and these
must be listed in the Education section of the GEMSAS Online Application Form. GEMSAS will be
able to retrieve your enrolment records through Automated Results Transfer System (if your
institution uses ARTS) at that time, but can only do so if you have listed the subjects in the
application or advised GEMSAS at info@gemsas.edu.au by 31
st
July.
For those enrolling in prerequisite subjects in 2022, you must have results available by Friday 31
December 2022. Applicants should confirm with their enrolling institution that results will be
available by this date.
Aboriginal and/or
Torres Strait
Islander Applicants
Applicants who are from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background submit their
application directly to UQs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit. Applicants must be
able to provide documented proof of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status. Eligible
applicants will be invited to participate in a panel interview to assess their academic
preparedness to enter the MD program.
Sitting the GAMSAT is not compulsory for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants at
UQ. However, it is recommended that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants who
choose to undertake the GAMSAT exam also apply through GEMSAS and include UQ in their
preference list, in addition applying directly to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
Unit. Additional information is available on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit
website.
Central Queensland
-Wide Bay Regional
Medical Pathway
The Central Queensland Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway (RMP) is an immersive, rural
contextualised and community connected medical program. In 2023, up to 60 graduate entry
places will be available.
To apply for this pathway, you must select UQ as your first, second or third preference (1,2 or
3). On the UQ preference page you can select this pathway. If you are unsuccessful in obtain an
offer in this pathway, you will be considered for the Brisbane medical program.
Successful applicants will commence Year 1 in Brisbane and then complete their medical studies
(years 2 4) in Central Queensland (CQ) or Wide Bay (WB). Applicants will be considered on the
following criteria:
Tier 1: Applicants from Central Queensland / Wide Bay
Applicants who have resided in Central Queensland and Wide Bay for 5 consecutive
years, or 10 years cumulatively.
Central Queensland and Wide Bay: means the geographic area, defined by the following
Local Government Areas, which comprises the designated catchment of the Regional
Medical Pathway:

Diamantina, Fraser Coast, Gladstone, Gympie, Isaac, Livingstone, Longreach, North
Burnett, Rockhampton, Winton, Woorabinda.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 63 of 96
Tier 2: Applicants with a rural background (excluding CQ and WB - Tier 1)
Applicants who have resided in any rural location in Australia for 5 consecutive years, or
10 years cumulatively (MM2-7).
Tier 3: Any other interested applicants
Any applicant who is interested in undertaking their medical studies in the Regional
Medical Pathway.
Applicants will be ranked within these tiers with offers made to eligible applicants in Tier 1 first.
Remaining places will be offered to eligible Tier 2 (MM2-7) rural applicants and then Tier 3.
Applicants who apply and are not offered a place in the Regional Medical Pathway may be
considered for the metropolitan program. The RMP applications will be ranked prior to the
Brisbane applications.
Applicants offered a place in the RMP will not be permitted to transfer to the Brisbane program.
Rural entry
In accordance with agreed government quotas, The University of Queensland will offer 28.5% of
places to students from a rural background.
Students will be eligible for consideration in the Rural Background Students (RBS) sub quota if
they have spent at least 5 years continuously, or 10 years cumulatively, living in a rural Australian
area as determined by the Modified Monash Model 2019 system. As approved rural background
applicants compete for places within a sub quota, the interview short listing threshold may be
lower for this cohort.
UQ awards two adjustments to the unweighted average GAMSAT score to assist rural
background applicants in being more competitive for non-bonded places. All other standard
selection policies and procedures still apply.
Applicants who wish to be considered through this scheme will need to provide documentary
evidence to GEMSAS as detailed on page 17 of the GEMSAS Guide and the GEMSAS website.
Interview
Interview Selection:
Selection for interview will be based on a 50:50 combination of the unweighted average
GAMSAT score and the assessed GPA (converted to a percentage). If required, the GPA will be
used as a tiebreaker.
Interview Format:
Interviews will be conducted in the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format consisting of several
interview stations, each with a single interviewer. MMIs will be held via videoconference using
the Zoom platform in September 2022.

Bachelor Degree/
GPA
In order to be eligible for entry, applicants must have completed a recognised* bachelor degree,
or will complete a recognised* bachelor degree by the end of the application year.
Applicants who only hold higher degrees
As all applicants require a recognised* bachelor degree for entry to the UWA MD course,
applicants who have completed a higher degree but have not completed a recognised* bachelor
degree will not be eligible for consideration.
GPA
Domestic applicants who were successful in obtaining an interview for 2022 entry averaged GPA
of 6.75.
Study included in the GPA calculation:
Applicants must have achieved a GPA of at least 5.5 at time of interview selection. The GPA is
calculated on the most recent three full-time-equivalent years (FTE) of study (e.g. 3 FTE is 144
credit points at UWA). Please note this excludes any exemptions, credit or advanced standing.
UWA includes Bachelor, Honours year (only if already completed or if it will be completed by end
of semester one, 2022), Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework
level of study in the GPA calculation if undertaken in the most recent three years FTE. Additional
study (other than honours) does not need to be completed. Applicants who have undertaken
additional study (whether postgraduate or additional undergraduate study) should indicate this
on the GEMSAS application.
Unweighted GPA:
The GPA for UWA is not weighted. To calculate an unweighted GPA you simply need to add the
three GPA years (final GPA year, final GPA year-1 and final GPA year -2) together and divide by
three. If you only have two years of results at the time you calculate your GPA you would add
the two GPA years together and divide by 2.
Further GPA Complications:
Please see our website for information on how we deal with the following complications to a GPA
calculation:
Ungraded Passes (and Fails)
Exchange Studies
Credit/Exemptions/Advanced Standing
GEMSAS

Not-for-degree/Open University studies.
Repeating Units
Minimal results in the current year of study:
Where an applicant has 0.25 FTE (or less) of graded results for their final GPA year at the end of
semester 1, 2022, Admissions will include older study, where available. Where no older study is
available, Admissions will calculate the GPA on only the “GPA Final-1and “GPA Final-2” years
and will calculate over 1FTE to include all results. For example if an applicant has a total of 2.125
FTE studies, one of the GPA years will be calculated from 1.125 FTE. In this instance, if an
applicant is made an offer, it will be conditional upon their performance in all units in 2022 (see
section below about conditional offers).
Applicants with completed PhDs:
Applicants who have completed a PhD (from a recognised Institution) by the time of application
will be awarded/deemed a GPA of 7.0.
Applicants with completed Masters by Research:
Completed Masters by research qualifications are not included in the GPA calculation. Instead
Admissions will add a small bonus of 0.2 to the overall GPA for applicants who have completed
this qualification by 31 July.
Degree Completion and semester two, 2022 results - Conditional Offers:
Applicants who are eligible for a course offer and have not completed their first bachelor degree
by semester 1, 2022 will be made a conditional offer requiring them to achieving a minimum
GPA of 5.5 in the final semester.
Please note that if you are completing your initial bachelor degree and undertake a course of
action that will result in you receiving late results, you may not meet offer conditions by the
required deadline (i.e. 31 December 2022) which will result in your offer being withdrawn.
Therefore take care when undertaking any course of action in semester 2, 2022 that could
delay your results or degree completion. This may include undertaking deferred/supplementary
exams, undertaking units that fall outside normal semesters (e.g. summer units or trimester
units) or going on exchange. If you anticipate any problems, please contact the Admissions
Team as soon as possible to determine whether your offer will be withdrawn.
Accelerated degrees and conversion courses:
UWA will accept 2-year bachelor degrees and 1-year conversion degrees for the purposes of
admission to our medical course. However, applicants undertaking a 1-year conversion degree
who have not completed a previous bachelor degree must complete that course before applying
for entry to UWA (i.e. applicants cannot apply during the conversion course).
____________
*The completed undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or a Higher
Education Institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a recognised
Bachelor qualification listed by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE).
Currency of
qualification
There is no 10-year rule for entry to UWA which means that we will consider applicants with
degrees older than 10 years.
GAMSAT
Applicants must obtain a minimum overall score of 55 with no individual section score below 50.
Domestic applicants who were successful in gaining an interview for 2022 entry averaged a
GAMSAT score of 72.2.
Indigenous
Applicants
UWA encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to consider applying for entry into
the MD. In addition to the pathways listed here, there are alternative pathways available for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. These are available through the Centre for

The UOW Doctor of
Medicine (MD)
The UOW Doctor of Medicine (MD) program aims to produce excellent medical practitioners
who have the capacity and desire to contribute to the enhancement of health care for patients
in all geographic settings, but particularly in regional, rural and remote communities. We strive
to use recent technology, best educational practice and an innovative curriculum to produce
graduates with a commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based, reflective and cost-effective
medical practice. The program is based on the best educational evidence from medical schools
around the world. It features an innovative, integrated spiral curriculum which revolves around a
case based learning core.
The UOW Graduate School of Medicine is seeking to enrol candidates who have a proven high
level of achievement in a higher education program of study, a wide range of experiences and
activities, the personal qualities and skills deemed desirable in a medical student and
practitioner, and a commitment and desire to contribute to health outcomes in regional, rural
and remote Australia.
Clinical exposure begins from the first semester of the program within hospitals, primary care
settings and community health centres. Students spend significant time during their training
undertaking both short and long term clinical placements in many regional and rural locations.
These attachments allow students to gain insight into life in regional, rural and remote
communities and to gain an insight into the challenges and rewards that come with practicing
medicine in these settings.
Places Available in
2023
Approximately 84 places will be available, including up to 17 places for international students or
full fee-paying domestic students (subject to final approval). Students will be placed at either
Wollongong campus or Shoalhaven campus for the first 18 months of the program (Phase 1).
Students may complete placement outside of these areas during Phase 1.

Bachelor Degree/
GPA
All applicants must have completed, or be in their final year of study at time of application, an
undergraduate degree consisting of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or
equivalent (FTE). The undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or an
equivalent overseas Bachelor qualification from an institution that is recognised under the
framework and guidelines set by the Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment
(DESE) (previously AEI-NOOSR). All qualifying degrees need to be completed by 31
st
December
2022.
Medical school places are limited and competitive. Applicants who have completed medical
studies in another country should seek advice from the Australian Medical Council about pathways
to recognition of their qualifications in Australia. Qualified physicians are not considered eligible
for entry to the UOW MD program. Applicants who have failed to complete medical studies
previously (including in Australia) would also not normally be considered eligible for entry.
Applicants who have studied medicine previously should contact GSM prior to close of applications
if they wish to confirm their eligibility.
Applicants must have a weighted GPA of greater than 5.5 on a 7 point scale at the time of interview
selection to be eligible to apply. The GPA score required to receive an offer for interview may

fluctuate annually. This GPA will be calculated based on the most recently completed Bachelor
degree (including an Honours year if applicable). Postgraduate qualifications are not included in
GPA calculations.
GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x 1, Final-minus-1 x 2 and Final x 3, and
then divided by 6, to give greater weight to the most recent results.
For 2023 entry, GPA scores will be used as a qualifying hurdle for interview offers. Applicants must
achieve a weighted GPA of 5.5/7.0 to meet the hurdle requirement. It will not be used in ranking
for interview or places offers once the hurdle has been met.
UOW does not normally recognise two-year Bachelor degrees or one year conversion degrees for
the purpose of admission to the medical course. Graduate entry two year programs, or applicants
who have completed the equivalent of a three year FTE Bachelor degree but have been awarded
credit for prior academic learning may be exempt from this rule. However, UOW generally requires
applicants to have completed at least two years of full-time study within their awarding institution.
Please contact GSM for more information if your degree is less than three years FTE in duration.
Accelerated Bachelor degrees are accepted by UOW; that is, a degree consisting of three full
time equivalent trimesters per year for two years from a recognised institution.
Combined Bachelor/Masters degrees must have all program requirements completed for the
qualification to be accepted for admissions purposes by 31
st
December 2022. This qualification
must have a minimum length of three years FTE, with at least two years FTE of Bachelor level
study. Applicants completing combined/double degrees will have their GPA calculated using the
final three years of their combined degree. If an applicant exits their combined degree to graduate
with a single eligible Bachelors degree, the GPA will be calculated using all units in the final three
years.
Applicants completing combined/double degrees will have their GPA calculated using the final
three years of their combined degree. If an applicant exits their combined degree to graduate with
a single degree (and the single degree must be a valid three year FTE Bachelor degree), the GPA
will be calculated to include only units from the single degree if identifiable; otherwise UOW will
revert back to using all units in the final three years. If an applicant is made an offer and
subsequently exits their combined degree to graduate with a single degree (and the single degree
must be a valid three year FTE Bachelor degree), then their offer is conditional to their
maintenance of the minimum required GPA.
UOW reserves the right to recalculate GPAs at any time before the close of the admissions cycle
if required.
Currency of
qualification
Applicants are required to have graduated from their undergraduate degree within ten years of
the closing date of applications.
Applicants whose undergraduate degree was completed outside the ten year period may still be
considered for admission if they have successfully completed the equivalent of one year full-time
tertiary study at Graduate Diploma level or higher at a recognised university within the last ten
years. If no postgraduate study has been completed in the last ten years, applicants can apply for
a waiver of this rule if they can demonstrate through other activities that they hold current high
level academic skills.
To request a waiver, applicants need to provide a copy of their university transcripts, CV, and any
other documentation in support of their request to md-enquiries@uow.edu.au. This should be
submitted prior to the closing date of applications to ensure that academic currency has been
deemed suitable to continue your application to UOW.
Applicants who are required to be assessed for academic currency due to the ten year rule will
be deemed ineligible for consideration of an interview and place at UOW for 2023 entry if:
An applicant submits a waiver request that is not approved by the UOW Admissions
Executive.
An applicant does not submit a waiver request at all.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 71 of 96
It is the responsibility of the applicant to research UOW requirements and submit a waiver
request if needed- UOW does not take responsibility if an applicant has been deemed ineligible
at UOW due to non-submission or late submission of a waiver request.
If a waiver request is submitted and not approved after the closing date of applications, no
changes to preferences can be made at this time. If a waiver request is submitted close to the
application closing date, UOW cannot guarantee that it will be processed before applications
close.
GAMSAT
A minimum GAMSAT Overall Score of 50 (with no individual section score below 50) is required
to be considered for interview.
Altus Suite (Casper
+ Snapshot)
Altus Suite is a standardised, two -part online assessment of non-cognitive skills, interpersonal
characteristics, and personal values and priorities that we believe are important for successful
students and graduates of our program.
Altus Suite consists of:
Casper: 100-120 minute online, open-response situational judgment test
Snapshot: 15-minute one-way video interview with standardized questions
Casper is an online video based scenario, situational judgement test and is designed to measure
the personal and professional traits, such as ethics, empathy and communication and how these
traits will be best suited towards a career in medicine. For domestic applications to be
considered at UOW GM, applicants need to have completed the Casper test during the testing
periods identified for UOW MD applicants. Applicants who do not have a valid Casper score will
not be considered eligible for entry, regardless of their competitiveness against other entry
criteria. For 2023 entry, Casper scores will be used as a primary hurdle requirement for interview
ranking and will be included along with interview score and portfolio score for final offers.
Snapshot is a short, one-way video interview. It is made up of three interview-style questions,
with two minutes to respond to each. Snapshot is an extra opportunity for you to demonstrate
your personal attributes, especially during this time where face to face communication is
difficult. This will help give UOW additional information to make more informed decisions on
your application and who you are as an individual. All candidates to UOW MD are required to sit
Snapshot in addition to the standard Casper test.
Casper testing dates for UOW MD domestic applicants for the 2022-2023 admissions cycle are:
Sun May 22, 2022 at 11:00 am AEST
Thurs June 2, 2022 at 8:00 pm AEST
Please visit the UOW MD Admissions website for updates and for our Frequently Asked
Questions.
It is recommended that applicants try and register to take the test on the first available date. If
you have not yet registered for Altus Suite by the time of GEMSAS applications closing, you must
register IMMEDIATELY to ensure you are included in the final test dates in time for consideration
this year. Applicants without Altus Suite scores/videos will not be considered for entry.
For more information on Altus Suite at UOW and how to register for the tests, please review
UOW MD Admissions webpage (UOW MD Admissions website ) or head directly to

UOW MD
Admissions Portfolio
The GEMSAS application form also incorporates the GM Admissions Portfolio which must be
completed by all applicants. The portfolio, application and rural residency forms should be
submitted electronically directly to GEMSAS and will be used as one of the criteria to rank your
eligibility for interview and for an offer of a place. This information must be submitted regardless
of UOW ranking on your preference form. Applicants who fail to submit a portfolio will not be
considered.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 72 of 96
The GM Admissions Portfolio may take time to complete, and it is recommended that applicants
commence preparation early and submit well prior to the closing date.
To assist in your preparation, a draft portfolio template is available from the MD Admissions
website for your consideration. This is a template only to be used as a guide - only portfolios
submitted in the approved format via GEMSAS will be accepted. It is essential to download the
portfolio guide to assist in the completion of your application. Please note that all activities
highlighted in the portfolio require a current email contact for verification.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to review their application before submission. Strictly no
changes can be made once submitted, with the exception of updating verification contact
information. Verification contact detail changes should only be requested if the verifier has
updated contact details or is no longer able to verify experience due to unforeseen
circumstances outside of the applicant’s control. All verification contact details should be
finalised before the submission of your portfolio.
The application form and portfolio must be completed electronically via GEMSAS by the
advertised closing date.
Indigenous
Applicants
GSM understands the important role of Indigenous medical practitioners in addressing the
disparity of health outcomes for Indigenous people. This is demonstrated through a
commitment to training Indigenous doctors by providing a range of support mechanisms for
applicants who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
Indigenous applicants are given priority access to MD places via a dedicated Indigenous student
selection pathway. Applicants can apply wither via GEMSAS or direct to UOW.
To be considered for these places when applying via GEMSAS, applicants must indicate their
Indigenous status at the time of application by the standard GEMSAS application deadlines.
Alternatively, Indigenous applicants may apply direct to UOW for the Indigenous selection
pathway with applications closing by late August 2022. For further information on this, please
contact the GSM on md-enquiries@uow.edu.au
Applicants in this category are required to reach acceptable levels of performance in selection
criteria as determined by the school. Applicants who can demonstrate academic proficiency in
cognate disciplines such as health professions and biomedical science may be exempt from
sitting GAMSAT please contact the GSM to see if GAMSAT is required for your application.
Indigenous applicants are not required to sit Altus suite (Casper / Snapshot).
Selected applicants will undertake online MD Admissions interview and a community panel
interview with Indigenous MD graduates/students and members of the local Community.
Financial scholarships such as the Dr Krish & S. Reddy Indigenous Medical Scholarship (Doctor of
Medicine) are available, with the aim of encouraging more Indigenous Doctors in our country,
and the ultimate goal of improving Aboriginal health outcomes in the longer term.
Please check the UOW GSM website for further information regarding Indigenous applications at
UOW Indigenous MD Applicants
Rural applicants
UOW MD Admissions gives preference to students who come from a rural background and can
demonstrate ties to regional, rural, and remote communities. Approximately 65% of students in
the UOW Doctor of Medicine program come from rural or regional communities.
UOW GSM uses the rural residency/schooling part of the application to assess your background
regarding living and studying in rural and regional areas. The information on your form is
assessed and scored using the Modified Monash Model (MM2 to 7). GSM will require rurality
verification of your schooling and residential address details as outlined in your Admissions
Portfolio. Rurality supporting documentation must be submitted directly to GEMSAS as per the
instructions outlined in this guide.
For more information on rural classifications please see page 17 of this guide.

Campus and place
type preference
At the time of application applicants will need to indicate their preferred campus (Wollongong or
Shoalhaven) for the first 18 months of the program. This preference will be considered but not
guaranteed.
Extenuating circumstances for campus preference may be considered. Applicants will be
contacted by GSM to supply relevant supporting documentation if required.
Applicants must also indicate their place type preferences at time of application, in the order
they would most like to be offered. UOW currently offers CSP and BMP places.
UOW is currently seeking approval to also offer a small number of full fee-paying domestic
places for the 2023 intake. Further details regarding these places will be available on the UOW
website once approved. If an applicant preferences an FFP place but there are none available for
2023, they will automatically revert to their next place type preference.
Campus and place type preferences have no influence on the decision for offer.
Interview
Applicants for the UOW MD who meet the qualifying hurdles of GPA and Casper performance
are ranked for interview using 50% standardised GAMSAT and 50% standardised portfolio scores
(including rurality). Approximately 160 applicants will be invited to interview.
Domestic interviews for 2023 entry will be conducted by formally trained interviewers in an
online format in the week commencing 26 September 2022. Interviewees are rated on personal
qualities including their communication skills, empathetic and ethical approach, reflective
manner, teamwork and decision-making skills.
Offers
On the completion of the interview process, candidates standardised interview/Casper scores
and portfolio scores are used to rank for offer, with equal weighting. Snapshot may be used for
tie-breaker and borderline candidates. GPA and GAMSAT results are not included in the formula
after interview.
Offers are made in November with a small number of subsequent offers in December and
January (if required). Offers are made for a specific status, campus and year only.
Candidates who do not respond to their official Letter of Offer by the required due date as
specified by University will have it rescinded, and the offer may be allocated to the next eligible
applicant in a subsequent offer round at the discretion of the University.
Offers to successful candidates completing their degree in 2022 will be conditional to their
maintenance of the minimum required weighted GPA of 5.5. Evidence of completion must be
produced for the offer to be ratified.
Qualifying degrees must be completed by 31
st
December 2022, unless otherwise approved by
the Admissions Executive.
Deferral
Offers of a place are made for a specified year only and course commencement can only occur in
January/February (Semester 1) of each calendar year. Deferral of a place is not normally granted.
Applicants who do not, or are unable to accept an offer, must re-apply if they wish to undertake
the course in a subsequent year.
International
Applicants
International application processes are slightly different and international applications are
assessed on a rolling basis from late February 2022. International applicants should apply
directly to GSM. Please check the UOW GSM website for further information regarding

FAQs about the application process and GPA Calculations
What happens to my application?
GEMSAS is a computerised matching system which calculates GPAs and bonuses, assesses applications for eligibility, and
uses an algorithm to rank and allocate eligible applicants to their highest preferenced medical school. For more details
about the matching algorithm, please refer to www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes.
Applications will be assessed according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. GEMSAS will assess the eligibility
and competitiveness of all applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is not eligible or not ranked
highly enough he or she will be assessed for the second-preference school and so on until the applicant has either been
allocated an interview at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.
Applications will be assessed again after interviews according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. Interview
scores will be standardised and used by all participating schools. GEMSAS will assess the competitiveness of all
interviewed applicants for their first-preference medical school. If the applicant is not ranked highly enough he or she will
be assessed for the second-preference school and so on until the applicant has either been offered a place at a
preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.
You cannot be considered for an offer at a school which is a higher preference than the school at which you were
interviewed. They have already decided you do not meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough
to get an interview offer and that can't change in the subsequent offer round despite how well you do at interview .
Once an application is submitted NO FURTHER changes can be made.
How do I choose between two valid GAMSAT results?
You will have two valid GAMSAT results if you sat two separate GAMSAT tests - for example the GAMSAT
2
in 2021 and
2022. You are advised to compare both results against the acceptable scores for each university and then select the result
you wish the universities to consider.
Simply record in the Application Form the appropriate candidate identification number and year of sitting for the test you
wish to use for selection. This will be the only GAMSAT result that will be provided to GEMSAS.
It is not possible to mix individual section scores from different years or to use different tests for different universities.
Will the March or September GAMSAT scores be acceptable for entry to GEMPASS Australia medical
schools?
The September 2020, March 2021, September 2021, and March 2022 GAMSAT results are valid for application in 2022,
for entry in 2023.
The GAMSAT is held in March and September, however results from the September sitting in the year of GEMSAS
application cannot be used for that intake - it may only be used for designated future intakes:

Which school should I apply to?
There are ten Medical Schools in GEMPASS Australia. Domestic applicants may nominate up to six preferences. Please
take into consideration the special character of each medical school and choose as preferences those schools whose
philosophies, location and special character best matches your requirements.
There are significant differences in entry requirements between the schools. You might find that you have a much better
chance of gaining admission to one school over another. Please ensure you make your selections with care. Once
preferences are entered and your application submitted, you will not be able to change them. Subsequent transfers
between Schools are unlikely to be approved.
If you are not prepared to undertake the course at a particular university you should not list it.
You are advised to put only medical schools and types of places that you are prepared to accept. You are strongly advised
to obtain detailed information from the schoolswebsites to ensure you are fully informed on both the admissions criteria
and the structure of the individual programs. If you are offered a place and you decline it, or if you allow your offer to
lapse, then your application will be withdrawn from further processing and you will NOT receive another offer in the
current offer period. There is no requirement to list the full six preferences available to you.
I want to change my preferences/types of places.
Once you have submitted your application, this is not possible.
Exceptions:
The University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish
to add or remove the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. Changes must be made in
writing directly with the Institution on or before 4pm AEST 1
st
October 2022. See the Schools pages in this guide for details.
The University of Melbourne may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish to add or remove
the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. All changes must be submitted through
Melbourne Medical Schools Fee-Type Change Request’ form no later than 4pm (AEST) on 30 September 2022. See the
Schools pages in this guide for details.
My degree is more than 10 years old; am I still eligible to apply?
Bachelor degrees that were awarded more than 10 years prior to the anticipated commencement date may not be
acceptable at the school to which you are applying. Most schools accept postgraduate study within the last 10 years as
reason to waive this rule. They will then calculate the GPA on the most recent eligible study; see schools’ entries for
details.
To confirm whether your degree will be recognised, check the relevant schools’ entries in this Guide and their websites
and contact the schools if you are still in doubt.
The prerequisite subjects required for entry to the University of Queensland must be completed within 10 years of
commencing the MD.
Which degree will you use to calculate my GPA (the Qualifying/Key Degree)?
We will generally use the GPA from the most recently completed qualifying/key degree and this may include a degree
you will complete in the year in which you apply, except for UWA (see school website for details on what study is
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 78 of 96
included) who consider the most recent three years FTE (full time equivalent) of valid study. See the schools’ entries in
this Guide for more details.
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of
COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020
results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
What is the definition of an Honours Year, in terms of GEMSAS GPA calculations?
An Honours Degree is a research-intense award pegged at Level 8 in the AQF. One-year honours programs are a
specialised year of study undertaken as an extension to an undergraduate degree this is a ‘standalone Honours
award. Some four-year (or more) undergraduate programs have honours embedded within their structure, this is an
‘embedded’ Honours award. Standalone Honours are used as the Final GPA year along with the last two years of the
preceding bachelor degree. With embedded Honours, it is just the most recent three years of the degree that are used.
Exception:
UQ: please see their school entry for more information.
I have done (or I am completing) a standalone Honours Year. Will this be used for selection?
We include Honours results in GPA calculations, however this can become problematic where the Honours year isn’t
complete. Typically Honours results are only available at the end of the Honours year and we do a GPA calculation for
allocating applicants to interviews in the middle of the year. So, you would probably have a GPA calculated on the final
two years from your bachelor degree which will be used for getting an interview and then when the Honours results are
available, they would be used to confirm any conditional or provisional offer you may have been made. However, if you
do have results for Honours from Semester 1, these may be used in your GPA calculation together with results from the
last two years of your bachelor degree.
Exception:
The University of Melbourne, if a standalone Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, it will
not be used.
For UWA, if a standalone Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application it will not be used.
For UQ, a standalone Honours must be completed at the end of Semester 1 in the year of application to be included in
the assessment.
For Griffith University, if a standalone Honours degree is not completed by 31 July, it will not be used.
For Macquarie University, if there are results for less than 0.5 FTE in the standalone Honours degree from semester 1
completed, the Bachelor degree will be used to calculate the GPA. The Honours degree will be the key degree and a
conditional offer will be issued on completion of Honours.
Check the relevant schoolsentries in this Guide and their websites to determine if your current Honours will be used in
the calculation.
Will my Honours subject results or the overall Honours grade be used in my GPA calculation?
For Australian qualifications, where a Standalone Honours year is eligible to be included; if your Honours year consists
of subjects which have results then these will be used to calculate your GPA. If there are no subject results, and only an
overall Honours grade, then that will be used (refer to the GPA Conversion Table).
If both subject results and an overall Honours classification are available:
ANU, Griffith, Notre Dame, UWA, Wollongong the best GPA will be used.
Deakin, Macquarie, the University of Melbourne will use Honours subject results only.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 79 of 96
The University of Queensland will use the final Honours classification in the GPA assessment as per the Honours
category in the conversion table on page 94 for both standalone and embedded honours programs. Three year bachelor
degrees with integrated honours will have the honours result disregarded.
Please note the above only refers to Standalone Honours. Only UQ and Griffith will consider the Honours Classification
for an embedded program.
I have done (or I am completing) a Professional Honours. Will this be used for selection?
Please see the school entry section, to see which medical schools will consider a professional honours and the
conditions around it.

How will my 2020 results be used in GPA calculations?
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of
COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020
results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
For ANU, regardless of year of study, an applicant must have a minimum of 0.375 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) worth of
graded results for a GPA to be calculated for that particular ‘GPA year. Additionally, the total amount of ungraded’
results across the entire degree should not exceed 1.0 FTE. If more than one degree is used in the 3-year GPA
calculation, there should be no more than 1.0 FTE of ungraded results across the 3 years.
For Deakin, all 2020 results will be excluded from GPA calculations.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 80 of 96
For Griffith, 2020 results will be used in GPA calculations. Applicants may request to have ALL Semester 1/Trimester 1
grades from 2020 disregarded. Please refer to the Griffith school entry section for more details.
For Macquarie, Notre Dame, Wollongong, UWA and UQ, all 2020 results will be used in GPA calculations.
For the University of Melbourne, results for 2020 subjects completed before the COVID-19 pandemic and results for
standalone honours subjects completed in 2020 will be included in the GPA calculations for entry to the Doctor of
Medicine program. All other 2020 subject results will be excluded for entry. This is applicable from 2022 for all
forthcoming intakes.
Where 2020 results are excluded we would not seek to include earlier results in their place.
I am worried that my studies have been adversely impacted by COVID-19. Can I ask GEMSAS to have this
taken into consideration for my GPA calculation?
In response to COVID-19 disruptions, GEMSAS medical schools have made changes to the way that GPAs involving 2020
studies will be calculated. However, your GPA will still be calculated based on the grades awarded by your teaching
university. Any potential changes made to your grades to compensate for COVID-19 disruptions will need to be
discussed with your teaching university.
How do I allocate subjects to years to calculate my GPA?
First, read the documents at www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations.
The way to calculate your GPA is to take the total credit points and divide by the years normally taken to do the degree.
This will give you the number of credit points to allocate to each GPA year
3
.
Example:
Assume that all the units you did were of equal credit point value.
If you did 24 units in a 3-year degree you would allocate 8 units a year.
Working backwards chronologically take the most recently-completed 8 units and allocate them to the Final GPA
Year. Then take the next 8 units and allocate them to the Final-minus-1 GPA Year and the remaining 8 units will
be the Final-minus-2 GPA Year.
A GPA calculator is available for use on our application page (https://applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/home).
Exception: The University of Queensland (UQ), please check UQ’s school entry in this Guide for further information.
How are subjects allocated to the three GPA years?
We allocate by the order in which subjects were taken and not the level of the subjects. We use full-time equivalent (FTE)
study loads to allocate subjects to GPA years so we can take part-time, overloading and subjects of differing credit point
values into consideration.
How are subjects allocated to the GPA years, if I have non-standard semesters?
Subjects are still allocated in the year they were taken. If you have undertaken any non-standard teaching periods
outside of the standard Semester 1 and Semester 2 teaching periods offered at most institutions, where possible the
dates of these teaching periods will inform how they are incorporated into your GPA calculation. You may be contacted
for further clarification via email by the GEMSAS assessment team. If you do receive an email you will be required to
attach evidence from your Institution that shows the semesters in which subjects were taken, and the overall
chronology of semesters (e.g. unofficial transcript or enrolment record) via email to info@gemsas.edu.au.
3
Exception: for The University of Queensland the GPA is calculated over the entire duration of the degree and is not divided into years.

How are credits from prior study used in the GPA calculation?
See the GPA section on our website - GPA guidelines
If results for specified credit are shown, they will be included in GPA calculations. However, specified credit, as per the
definition, requires the key degree record to show the subject codes, names, weightings and results. Most results
retrieved through ARTS do not show this information. If prior credit does not meet this definition, it is treated as
unspecified credit, i.e. we will use the most recent eligible prior study up to the number of credit points awarded as credit
for prior study. Please note that we do not use hard copy transcripts where results are available via ARTS, and we will not
accept transcripts provided as clarification regarding specified credit not shown in ARTS.
Credits from prior study not at the same study level may not be used in the GPA calculation.
Examples:
If a bachelor degree has received credit from a lower AQF level qualification (e.g. Diploma, Advanced Diploma)
then typically the lower level study will not be included in the GPA, even where grades are available.
A standalone Honours or higher level qualification (AQF level 8 and higher) typically will not be credited to a
Bachelor degree, we would use your older Bachelor degree to make up the credit.
Exception: This does not affect UWA, they consider the most recent 3 full time equivalent years of eligible
study.
Exception: For Deakin, if unspecified credit is received the next most eligible prior study at AQF level 7 or
above will be used.
Who uses postgraduate study?
The following schools use postgraduate study in GPA calculations
UWA, who use the most recent three years FTE of results regardless of whether they are complete (except
honours (standalone or embedded honours) which must be complete). Please see school entry for a list of the
type of study included in the GPA.
UQ, who accept completed postgraduate degrees (Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters, Doctoral and PhDs) as
standalone qualifying/key degrees if successfully completed by the 31
st
of July in the year of application.
Deakin will calculate the GPA on the most recently completed three years FTE of study, including qualifications at
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework if successfully completed by 31 July 2022.
Griffith will calculate the GPA using the most recently completed qualifying/key degree/s (a Combined Bachelor/
Masters, Combined Bachelor/Postgraduate Diploma, Masters by coursework; Masters by Research; or PhD) if
completed by 31 July 2022. Griffith allocates an overall GPA of 7.00 for completed PhDs and a 7.00 for each full
time year of a completed Masters by Research (up to a maximum duration of two years). To complete the 3-FTE
years of study when using a Masters degree, the next most recent qualifying/key degree final year/s will be
included as required.
ANU will include Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework results in the 3-year GPA calculation if the degree
is completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application.
Macquarie University will calculate a GPA including Graduate Diploma and Coursework Masters, if this degree will
be completed by 31 December in the year of application. Completed Higher Degree Research Masters and PhD
will be used in GPA calculations if completed at the time of application.
The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle and Sydney, will calculate the GPA on the most recently
completed 3-FTE years of study including qualifications at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters
by coursework level, if completed by 31 July 2022.
Please see the Entry requirements All applicants section for more detailed information.
All other schools use the most recently-completed undergraduate degree only in GPA
calculations.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 82 of 96
I’ve done a postgraduate degree, do I calculate my GPA on that or on my undergraduate degree?
Postgraduate qualifications such as Masters, PhDs, or postgraduate diplomas, may be included in GPA calculations.
However, because schools do have different rules surrounding the use of these qualifications you should read the school
entries in this Guide or contact your preferred schools directly for advice.
For the University of Queensland, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, Doctoral and PhD results are
currently used for the GPA calculation for admission, if the program has been completed in full. The most recently
completed award (bachelor or postgraduate) will be used as the key degree. See UQ’s school entry in this Guide for
further information.
For The University of Western Australia, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by Coursework are
included in a 3-year GPA calculation. Applicants with a completed Masters by Research will be awarded a 0.2 bonus to
their overall GPA. Applicants with completed PhDs will be deemed a GPA of 7.00.
Griffith awards a GPA of 7.00 for each equivalent full time year taken to complete a Masters by Research only (the
remainder of the GPA will be taken from your most recently completed qualifying/key degree) and an overall GPA of
7.00 is given for a completed PhD (when this is the most recent qualification).
ANU will award a percentage bonus of 2% for a standalone Honours degree if the qualification is completed or due to
be completed by 31 December in the year of application. The bonus applies to standalone Honours degrees only.
Embedded and Professional Honours programs are included in the GPA calculation but do not receive the percentage
bonus. A percentage bonus may be awarded for a Masters by Research (2%) or PhD (4%) if the qualification is completed
prior to the date of application, course results for Masters by Research and PhDs are not included in the GPA calculation.
Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework degrees will not attract a bonus but may be included in the GPA
calculation if the degree is completed or due to be completed in the year of application.
Deakin will calculate the GPA on the most recent 3FTE of study. This will include Graduate Certificate, Graduate
Diplomas and Masters by coursework if successfully completed by 31 July 2022.
The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle and Sydney will include Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diplomas
and Masters by coursework, completed by 31 July 2022, in the 3-year FTE GPA calculation.
Macquarie University will calculate a GPA including Graduate Diploma and Coursework Masters, if this degree will be
completed by 31 December in the year of application. Completed Higher Degree Research Masters and PhD will be
used in GPA calculations if completed at the time of application. See the Macquarie University school entry in this
Guide for further information.
How will GEMSAS determine comparability of overseas qualification/s to the Australian Qualification
Framework?
GEMSAS assessors will review all overseas documents that are received and determine the comparison level of
the qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Often, this means confirming that a
Bachelor degree studied overseas is comparable in educational level to a Bachelor degree completed in Australia.
However, GEMSAS will also assess other types of post-secondary overseas qualifications claimed by applicants,
such as postgraduate studies and exchange programs.
For all overseas assessments GEMSAS uses the Australian government’s Department of Education, Skills and
Employment (DESE) (previously known as NOOSR/AEI NOOSR) guidelines and UK ENIC (previously UK NARIC) for
verification and level comparability. Where GEMSAS is unable to determine the comparison level of a
qualification using these guidelines, the assessment is passed to the institution/s to which the applicant has
applied.
For more information on GEMSAS Overseas qualification assessments please visit: http://www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-
calculations/
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 83 of 96
How will my overseas study be converted to an Australian comparable scale?
GEMSAS uses an Australian 7-point grade point average scale to calculate GPAs. As many other countries use a
different grading system, we may need to convert applicants’ grades to a 7-point GPA scale before their GEMSAS
GPA can be calculated.
GEMSAS will take the actual results from applicants’ overseas university transcripts and use the institution
grading information provided on the transcript to convert these grades to a 7-point GPA scale. To do this, we
need to know the minimum required pass marks and the maximum achievable mark. GEMSAS will generally use
the percentage mark where a transcript shows both an exact percentage mark and a letter grade.
If there is no information on a transcript regarding the grading scale, GEMSAS assessors may take further steps,
such as researching the institution and checking the grading system on the institution’s official website, or using
guidelines provided by The Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE). In some cases, we may
request applicants provide further documentation that confirms the grading system used by their institution.
If you know the minimum and maximum marks you can use the GPA Calculator on the GEMSAS website.
Completed vs Graduated?
All medical schools will use the year of completion or award, not the year of graduation. For example, if your final
semester of study was Semester 2, 2013 but the degree was conferred in March 2014. The degree will be considered to
have been completed in 2013.
What is the definition of a Conversion degree and how will it be used?
For most institutions a conversion degree is a course that is not a genuine minimum three full-time year
equivalent (FTE) qualification. If a Bachelors degree has a minimum three full-time equivalent (FTE) duration but
the applicant has studied less than that period towards that degree because they’ve gained credit from prior
studies from an Associate Degree, Advanced Certificate, Diploma or lower (lower than AQF level 7) this is not
denoted as a conversion degree.
Exceptions:
For ANU a Conversion Degree is deemed as a Bachelor Degree which has credit or advanced standing from a level
below AQF level 7 (e.g. credit or advanced standing from an Associate Degree, Diploma or TAFE level studies) .
Conversion degrees may be considered if the applicant has subsequently completed an AQF 7 or above
qualification.
Conversion degrees will be deemed as per the rules below:
If you have a Bachelor Degree with up to 0.375 FTE (maximum) of credit from below AQF level 7, the
award will not be deemed as a conversion degree and the credit will not be include d in the weighted
GPA calculation. The GPA will be calculated using the remaining results of which have been completed
at AQF level 7 and above.
If your Bachelor Degree has more than 0.375 FTE of credit from below AQF level 7, the award will be
deemed as a conversion degree. If you have a conversion degree, it cannot be accepted for admission
and cannot be used for GPA purposes.
For Wollongong: If you have received credit of greater than 1FTE from a program below an AQF Level 7 (i.e.
Associate Degree, Advanced Certificate, Diploma) then the award is deemed as a conversion degree and will not
be accepted. Any Bachelor degree below 2 FTE standard duration will also not be accepted. Any credit from an
international baccalaureate will also not be accepted. Please contact the school directly for more information.
For Deakin: If you have received credit of greater than 1FTE from a program below an AQF Level 7 (i.e. Associate
Degree, Advanced Certificate, Diploma) then the award is deemed as a conversion degree and will not be
accepted. Any credit from an international baccalaureate will also not be accepted. Please contact the school
directly for more information.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 84 of 96
For Macquarie if you receive credit from a program below an AQF level 7 (i.e. Associate Degree, Advanced
Certificate, Diploma) then the award is deemed as a conversion degree and will not be accepte d.
For Notre Dame: A conversion degree will be eligible for use as a qualifying degree if it is proceeded by a relevant
diploma or succeeded by a completed minimum one-year full-time (1FTE) postgraduate degree in a related discipline or
field.
For The University of Queensland: Conversion degrees cannot be used as a first degree, but they can be used as
subsequent degrees if an applicant has previously completed a three year bachelor level degree.
I was interviewed at my 3rd preference and I did really well in the interview but I would rather be offered a
place at my first preference. Is that possible?
You cannot be considered for an offer at a school above the preference of the school at which you were interviewed.
They have already decided that either you do not meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough to
get an interview offer. That status can't change in the subsequent offer rounds despite how well you perform at interview.
What is the standardisation of interview scores?
The standardisation of interview scores ensures comparability between institutions. This is a statistical process which
uses means and standard deviations from the different interview score distributions to put all the sets of scores onto
the same scale.
What happens to my application after interview?
If you are not made an offer by the School at which you were interviewed, your application will remain in the system and
will automatically be considered by your lower preference Schools (at which you are eligible for consideration) or by the
School at which you were interviewed (for a later offer) until you are either offered a place or all preferences have been
exhausted. If you are interviewed by your final preference School, your application cannot be considere d by any other
preference.
Can I get my interview score or ranking data?
GEMSAS is not able to provide any ranking data or interview scores. Many factors impact on who gets an offer and apart
from the selection components used, there are also factors at play including your willingness to accept bonded or fee
places, whether you are a rural or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant and whether or not you were eligible
for bonuses/adjustment or for special sub-quota places.
How are offers released?
All offers are decided on the same day and unsuccessful applicants are notified by email that day. GEMSAS and some
medical schools advise successful applicants by email but for some medical schools offers are complex to generate, so
these notifications may take a few days to reach you. Please make sure you have listed info@gemsas.edu.au and GEMSAS-
noreply@vtac.edu.au as ‘trusted senders in your email system.
How many offers will I receive?
Applicants are made only one offer each year. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent
round offers. If you decline your offer you are removed from the applicant pool and can apply again next year.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 85 of 96
What is a conditional offer?
If you are made an offer of a place, and you have not completed your degree (or prerequisites for the University of
Queensland, or you are undertaking additional bachelor or postgraduate studies for UWA), then the offer will be
conditional. When we get your final results we will calculate your final GPA and check that it meets any conditions the
school may have put on your offer (e.g. maintaining a stated GPA). If it does, your offer will be confirmed, and if it doesn't
meet the conditions the offer will be withdrawn. Applicants enrolled in a combined degree (bachelor/bachelor double
degree) who receive a conditional offer for a place at the University of Melbourne must complete both awards in order
to have their offer confirmed. If you studied at an ARTS university, we will try to get your final results and confirmation
of completion of your degree electronically.
We may have difficulty obtaining your final results and confirmation of completion of your degree
and may request your assistance to encourage your university to upload your results and completion
data and to authorise the release of this information to GEMSAS.
If you studied at a non-ARTS university you will need to upload an official academic transcript that shows final results
and evidence of completion of your degree.
I had better GPA and GAMSAT scores than a friend and they were offered a place at X University. Why
wasn’t I offered a place?
Selection is very complex and many factors impact on whether or not you will get an offer. There are many reasons why
an applicant with the same or lower GPA and GAMSAT scores as you may have been offered a place when you were not.
They may have performed better in the interview and/or portfolio or personal statements
They may have come from a rural background
They may be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island descent
They may have received bonus points for postgraduate study
They may have received adjustment/bonus points or come through a preferential entry scheme that recognises
disadvantage
They may have accepted a BMP or Fee place where you indicated that you would not be prepared to accept one
of these places
They may have accepted a place in a special sub-quota
I want to decline an offer of a place. Can I be considered for another place or receive another offer?
Applicants are made only one offer each year. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent
round offers. If you decline your offer you are removed from the applicant pool and can apply again next year.
I have not received an offer in the main round what happens now?
If you do not receive an offer of a place in the main round of offers after interview, your application will remain in the
system. Additional offers may be made during December and January after final results of applicants completing their
qualifying/key degree are known.
It is NOT possible for applicants to change their preferences after the application closing date.
What happens if I am also applying for courses outside the GEMPASS Australia medicine courses?
There are many applicants for medical school places who will not be offered an interview or a place. If you have been
offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place,
then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon
as possible. Withdraw by emailing info@gemsas.edu.au quoting your GAMSAT ID. You will be contacted to confirm your
withdrawal.

FAQs about completing your application
What is the USI number and is it a mandatory requirement?
A USI is a reference number made up of ten numbers and letters. It creates an online record of your nationally
recognised training and qualifications attained in Australia. Yes, it is a mandatory requirement to provide your USI
number in the application. For more information see http://www.usi.gov.au/
I didn’t receive confirmation of my submitted information or my payment
After completing the Application Form you will need to SUBMIT your application. You will then be taken to the payment
system to make your payment. Once your payment has been made successfully you will be shown a receipt screen.
Please note your receipt number or print this screen for your records. If you are not able to complete
these steps, please email info@gemsas.edu.au.
You will not receive an email from GEMSAS confirming your application has been submitted. You will receive an email
with a receipt number once payment has been made and this is confirmation that your application has been successfully
submitted.
I have previously applied through GEMSAS
If you have previously applied through GEMSAS, you are still required to register online and complete and submit a new
application.
Very Important: If there has been no change to your education history and you applied through GEMSAS within the last
two years (in 2020 or 2021) you do not need to provide GEMSAS with your academic documents again. You will be
contacted should GEMSAS require any further academic documentation.
For Deakin adjustment (bonus) exceptions see pages 30 to 33.
Do I need to pay for each medical school preference?
You pay a single fee of $230 and this covers up to six preferences.
I can’t see the documentation requirements and coversheets for submitting supporting documentation
Documentation requirements and coversheets are generated according to your selections and responses. As your
application progresses, the Documentation page with:
documentation requirements for academic transcripts and English Language Competency documentation and
coversheets for rural background and Deakin Adjustment (bonus)
will appear on the left of your screen. You will only have access to your coversheets once you have submitted and paid
for your application. To access your documentation requirements and coversheets, after you have submitted and paid
for your application, log into your application and select the Documentation button on the My Applications page.
If you are unsure if you should supply supporting documentation, please check pages 9 to 11 and 17 of this guide.
If you cannot upload and/or email any of the documents mentioned above, please email info@gemsas.edu.au and include
your GAMSAT ID.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 87 of 96
How do I email my supporting documentation (Rural background and/or Deakin adjustments (bonuses))?
Your coversheet/s will describe in detail where to send your supporting documentation, deadlines for emailing the
documentation and what type of documents can be accepted. It is very important that you read your coversheet/s
carefully.
How do I upload my supporting documentation (Education transcripts and/or English Language
Competency)?
The documentation requirements page will describe in detail where to upload your supporting documentation,
deadlines for uploading the documentation and what type of documents can be accepted. It is very important that you
read this page carefully. Any incorrect documentation provided may delay the processing of your application.
Are there any restrictions on the types of academic documentation accepted?
Yes, we will only accept PDF or JPEG file formats, max 15MB. Word documents (.doc, docs, .rtf) are not accepted.
For Australian and New Zealand qualifications digital documents issued by My eQuals are accepted, provided they meet
the My eQuals guidelines. You must download a PDF of your document from the My eQuals portal which is digitally
signed by your institution and has the required security features including the certificate key or blue banner verification.
Sharing links for download via My eQuals is not permitted. For example, certified documents viewed in Adobe Acrobat
Reader have a blue ribbon above the document stating: “Certified by the issuing education provider… all signatures are
valid. Please note that the blue ribbon/certification may not be visible in some web browsers and non-Adobe
applications.
For overseas qualifications colour scans of official hard copy documents or institution-issued secure PDF documents are
accepted. Scans must be fully legible, including any notes, codes, logos and legends. Whether security features on a PDF
meet GEMSAS requirements is at the discretion of GEMSAS Assessment. Documents which do not meet security
requirements, may be rejected, or may only be conditionally accepted.
Scan each document separately and include both sides (front and back) if applicable. If your academic documents have
information on both sides (even if it is generic information rather than your academic results), please ensure that you
scan both sides of the document. Transcripts received from the same qualification can be combined into one file.
It is very important you read the information on the Documentation requirements page as any incorrect documentation
may delay the processing of your application.
I don’t have a scanner. How can I send my documents?
Phone applications can be used to scan your documents (e.g. Cam Scanner, Adobe Scan) but askew or poorly focused
scans will not be accepted. Ensure that the entire document is scanned, without scanning external surround such as
tabletops or a frame or your fingers. The document needs to fill the entire space and all edges of the document must be
visible. The documents must not look warped by the scan.
I don’t have an original transcript; can I submit a certified copy?
No, only a scanned official transcript/s or digitally secure PDFs will be accepted. Screenshots, photos, certified
copies, unofficial results and online printouts are not accepted.
A Statement of Results is not acceptable and is not considered in place of a full transcript, nor is a printout of an academic
record.
GEMSAS
Version 1.3 30 March 2022 Page 88 of 96
If you are required to provide documentation, detailed guidelines will be available in the Documentation page in the
GEMSAS application portal.
My transcript is not in English; should I provide a translation?
Any qualification undertaken in a language other than English must be documented by the original transcript,
accompanied by an officially translated original (by a NAATI translator), in English. The NAATI translation must be a scan
of the original hard copy translation document issued by the translator. It should feature the translator's original stamp
and signature on every page. Electronic versions of the translation, where the translator's stamp has been affixed
electronically, will not be accepted.
I’m still studying this year; do I need to submit a 2022 transcript?
Yes. Applicants completing their qualifying/key degree in 2022 will be assessed on the basis of the information available
at the time of application.
If your results are from an ARTS university, your Semester 1, 2022 results will be electronically retrieved during June and
July. If you have any unpaid fees at your university we will not be able to retrieve your results until these have been
attended to. Please do this ASAP.
For study at a non-ARTS university, in Semester 1, 2022 please upload an official academic transcript as soon as possible.
Please upload the required official transcripts and/or completion certificate by 15 July.
Applicants completing their degree in 2022 will only be offered an interview if the GPA at the time of application (with
2022 results to date) meets the required level.
Such applicants should also note that while decisions on interview offers will be made on the basis of
results available at the time of application, final 2022 results may be used to determine offers of a
place. Refer to each schools entry in this Guide for more information.
I’m currently studying and plan on taking an Early Exit, what do I do?
If you are currently studying a program and intend on taking an Early Exit or Alternative Award at the end of the year
you must declare this on your application. If after you submit your application, you decide you will be taking an early
exit, you must inform info@gemsas.edu.au as soon as possible, so your account can be updated.
Examples of combined programs that could lead to an early exit are:
Bachelor/Bachelor
Bachelor/Master
Bachelor/Postgraduate Diploma
Bachelor with Embedded Honours
For example, if you are currently studying a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts and at the end of the year plan to
complete and be awarded the Bachelor of Science, this should be declared as an early exit on your application. Similarly,
if you are currently studying a Bachelor/Masters program, and plan on taking an early exit to be awarded the single
Bachelor degree then this should also be declared.
If during our assessment we notice that you are in a combined degree, or a 4- or 5-year program and unlikely to
complete the degree at the end of the year without claiming an early exit, you may be contacted to clarify your study
claims.

Exchange studies and transcripts
Exchange studies are part of your degree and therefore we use the results from those studies in calculating your GPA.
Exchange studies may appear on your home university transcript as pass/fail subjects, but we use the attained results
from the exchange institution’s transcript to calculate your GPA.
You must obtain and supply an official transcript for any exchange studies you have done.
Exception:
The University of Western Australia will normally use the results that appear on the home
university’s transcript (in most cases this is an ungraded pass or an ungraded fail). Please see the
Faculty website for further information and for exceptions to this general rule.
Any qualification undertaken in a language other than English must be documented by the original
transcript, accompanied by an officially translated original (by a NAATI translator), in English. The
NAATI translation must be a scan of the original hard copy translation document issued by the
translator. It should feature the translator's original stamp and signature on every page. Electronic
versions of the translation, where the translator's stamp has been affixed electronically, will not be
accepted.
My declared study and/or results have changed. What should I do?
Ensure you inform GEMSAS ASAP if there is any change to your study, especially your qualifying/key degree.
Ensure you inform GEMSAS ASAP if there is an update to a Semester 1 or Semester 2 result or if there is a delay in obtaining
a Semester 1 or Semester 2 result (e.g. sitting a special/supplementary or deferred exam), so GEMSAS is made aware of
the need to retrieve these results.
Note that ARTS results are retrieved on request and unless you notify us of updates, we will not request
ARTS results outside of the scheduled times.
What study should I declare in the application?
ALL tertiary study is to be declared (this includes completed and incomplete study), whether relevant or not to your
qualifying/key degree.
I have lodged through GEMSAS two or more applications for medicine
Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.
How do I submit portfolios for The University of Notre Dame, Australia and the University of Wollongong,
and personal statement for Macquarie University?
Portfolios and personal statements are completed in the application form and submitted once you submit your
application. To avoid any potential loss of data due to session closure, we suggest you complete your portfolio or
personal statement offline first and copy it into the live online application once you are satisfied with your work. As
character count methods differ between programs you will need to check your online portfolio using the review of
responses generated PDF. If your portfolio was not copied in its entirety you may need to do some further online editing
to reduce the character count. Some special characters, such as quotation marks, may be removed for security and
formatting reasons.
GEMSAS

How do I submit my written application for the Deakin University Rural Training Stream (RTS)?
The written application for the RTS is completed in the application form and submitted once you submit your
application. To avoid any loss of data due to session closure we suggest you complete your written application offline
first and copy it into the live online application once you are satisfied with your work. As character count methods differ
between programs you will need to check your written application using the review of responses generated PDF. If your
written application was not copied in its entirety you may need to do some further online editing to reduce the
character count. Some special characters, such as quotation marks, may be removed for security and formatting
reasons.
How do I know if my documents have been accepted?
If you have uploaded your documentation, you will be able to view the documents that have been accepted in the
Documentation button on the My Applications page of your application. If anything further is required, or the documents
were not up to the acceptable guidelines you will be notified via email.
For the Deakin Adjustment and Rural background supporting documentation, you will receive an automated response
acknowledging receipt once you email your supporting documentation.
How can I update my personal details after I have submitted my application?
After you have completed your application you can update your gender, previous names, email, phone number, postal
and/or residential addresses by logging back in to your application at applygemsas.edu.au and updating details in the
Account, Personal Details and Contact Details sections.
If you need to advise GEMSAS of an error in your date of birth or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander status, or a change
to your current name or citizenship details, please email info@gemsas.edu.au and include your GAMSAT ID along with
the updated information.
