Introduction
1
The Government of India has implemented numerous schemes for the welfare and upliftment
of every section of the society including minorities especially the economically weaker and
deprived sections of the society. The Ministry of Minority Affairs implements various
programmes/ schemes for socio-economic and educational empowerment of six notified
minority communities viz. Buddhist, Christian, Jain, Muslim, Parsi and Sikh.
The different scholarship schemes/programmes encourage parents from minority communities
to send their children to school, lighten their financial burden on school education and sustain
their efforts to support their children to complete school education. The schemes form the
foundation for their educational attainment and provide a level playing field in the competitive
employment arena. Empowerment through education, which is also one of the Sustainable
Development Goal (SDG), has the potential for upliftmentment of the socio economic
conditions of the minority communities.
